Online Gallert or Museum Exhibition

Museums and galleries are currently closed due to COVID-19, however, many major art museums have created online tours of their current, temporary exhibitions and are expanding the content on their websites. Write a review of TWO exhibitions of artworks that you view in the online exhibition (the following link are the exhibitions) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqfkto3QGHc&t=3s &  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1IZxr6eGJqk You may write a positive review or a negative review; it is most important to express your own reaction to the works. Pick a MINIMUM of TWO works of art PER EXHIBITION to write about. Clearly state the details of each artwork (artist name, title of piece, year, medium used) and if this is not stated in the video, look this up online. Search online for an artist’s or curator’s statement (if none is narrated in the video) to help you understand the context and concept of the work and the artistic intent.  Consider the elements of the artwork; the subject matter, the composition and design elements, and the artist’s technique.  Is your reaction to the work emotional, intellectual, or both?  Be specific in stating your reasons and give examples of why you like or dislike the work. Do not finish with a conclusion (it is a waste of words).

Carolingian and Ottonian Art and Architecture

In this module, we’ll learn about the Emperor Charlemagne (ca. 800 CE) and his unifying  of Western Europe, creating the so-called “Holy Roman Empire” and thereby achieving stability in  the region  for the first time since Roman rule.  We will also learn about the Ottonian Emperors, who succeed Charlemagne and, in the Post-Millennium era (Year 1000 CE), will sponsor the construction of many massive churches, built in the  “Romanesque” style.  Read:  In the Gardner text (or equivalent), read the following pages: pp. “Carolingian Art,” pp. 161-169; “Ottonian Art,” pp. 166-169.  https://docs.google.com/document/d/1BJFsKRsg3yR17Cvrol6AfYypW0JCFBuojfIE0hyvKz0/edit?usp=sharing Required Viewing: “Charlemagne and the Carolingian Revival.”  The folks at Khan academy do an excellent job (mostly) of producing accessible, clear and content-rich videos. They are efficient and, well, short, too! https://www.khanacademy.org/humanities/medieval-world/carolingian-ottonian/carolingian1/v/charlemagne-and-the-carolingian-revival  (Links to an external site.) Recommended Viewing: “Skill Share: Charlemagne, The Father of Europe.” NOTE: This video, highly informational and relatively short (ca. 21 minutes), is fast (too fast?) and filled with lots of information that doesn’t directly relate to the art history of the period. I DO recommend you start at the 14:20 minute section, “Carolingian Renaissance.”  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J34_Qog2O8k&feature=youtu.be ASSIGNMENT: Carolingian and Ottonian Art and Architecture Respond to the 3 prompts, below: 1. Distinguish between the Palatine Chapel at Aachen and St. Michael’s in Hildesheim. In what ways are they similar? How are they different? 2. Bishop Bernward commissioned several large works for placement in his church, including a pair of bronze doors. What narrative (story) is represented, here? Describe the content and how it is represented. 3. Charlemagne is described as the “Father of Europe.” What does this mean?

Construction & Innovation

The idea of the paper is to determine how the Romans were able to build the Colosseum shading device that was hoisted over the stadium in the 70 AD. This shading device was called the Velarium, which was the Latin name given for the retractable, paneled, awning at the Roman Colosseum. Its purpose was to provide shade for the spectators who watched the gladiatorial games in the blistering sun and heat of Ancient Rome. So the direction of the paper must be an original research idea and solve a question about the construction and innovation of the Colosseum shading design which is called the Velarium. Please conduct rigorous research from a variety of sources such as internet, books etc. Footnotes: Whole paper must contain a minimum of 3 accurate footnotes from a physical book with the exact page number. Maximum 3 footnotes per page from collected sources. Work Cited: Must list all source information from books, web sites, etc. on the last page. Must be a minimum of 1,100 words-double spaced, excluding footnotes, title Page, and work cited page.

Please Look Carefully at the Directions

Final Project of Virtual Interview Paper and Presentation You will pick up an artist from the museum trip to MoMA (please refer to the list at the end of syllabus) for your final Virtual Interview Project (3 pages), and for the 4-5 minute presentations on the same topics.   In the Virtual Interview Paper a.    In question and answer format. (Q and A). You don’t have to do the real interview. It is virtually constructed. b.    You have to do research on the artist and discuss at least two art works by the artists in your interview. (Our Visual Analysis Guide is still a good reference for the information to be included in the interview paper.) (In the interview, Q &A can be about artist biography, period or movement and its characteristics, specific formal innovation, theme, style, technique, concepts and criticism etc.) Please attach bibliography and footnotes. You do not have to do a long introduction as the sample paper. You can just have a short outline to introduce your project. For example: 1.    Artists name: Vincent Van Gogh (born 1853: died 1890) Date and place of interview: (You can construct your own scenario) 2.    The 3-page Virtual interview follows the Q and A form and should avoid unnecessary or unimportant questions (such as “When were you born? Or even illogical questions such as “When did you die? ) and focus on the discussion of concept of style, two art works, historical context, influences and criticism etc. (Biography should be limited to ½ page) Avoid long answers. Paraphrase instead of direct plagiarism of your research material. 3.    Please attach images of the art works in discussion and research material. (Find authentic research resources such as Library search, museum website, art journals, New York Times, Artist or etc. It would be good to have bibliography and footnotes.) In the Class Presentation (GroupI with last name Initial from A to L on Dec. 10) (Group II with last name Initial from K to Z on Dec. 17.) d.     You will give a 4-5 minute presentation (about 4-8 slides of PowerPoint on the artist of your paper  in class time. The presentation does not have to be in the interview format. e.     If two students collaborate, you will present 6-8 minutes and submit 5-page paper. The purpose of this presentation is to share each other’s work and to introduce your artist to the class. You can decide your format or creative way to present. Here are my several suggestions: 1.    Do a conventional presentation to introduce your artist. You can have about 4-8 slides of powerpoint on the artist of your paper to present. Or.. 2.    You can read part of your interview paper. If two students collaborate, you will present 6-8 minutes and you can do it in a Q&A dialogue form. Or 3.    You can play the artist and be dramatic….like Jackson Pollock’s video (paint and talk at the same time.) 4.    In other words, you can be creative. Relax and share with your classmates. 5.    Do rehearsal of your presentation and count the time frame. 6.    Please arrive 20 minutes before class and bring an external hard drive with your presentation to load your powerpoint images to Class Computer before class starts. (Please do not use your presentation time to log on google account or email account. (We cannot use your I-pad, computer or other device)
