Art Appreciate

In a fully developed essay of three to five paragraphs, address the following prompt:  Explain what Berger means when he says: “According to usage and conventions which are at last being questioned but have by no means been overcome, the social presence of a woman is different in kind from that of a man… men act and women appear.”  What is the visual evidence for this theory? Give some specific examples. Make sure to discuss the difference between the nude and naked in your initial response. You will need to address all of the key concepts from this chapter that relate to the prompt to get a perfect score. Finally, you must incorporate several works of art into the essay as your visual evidence. Remember to name and describe the images/objects in detail before you explain how they support your point

The Arts of Central Africa

Reliquary figure, Fang culture, Mid 19th c. Wood. Private Collection Hello Class! The focus of our fourth discussion is the arts of central Africa and Kongo, including the Fang, Kota, Kuba.  I would like to focus this discussion on the ancestor reliquaries and power images created by the above mentioned cultures.  Ancestor reliquaries and power images served distinct functions including assisting in crop production, channeling the protective power of the ancestors, divination, healing and the recording of information.   Please select an an example of an ancestor reliquary or power figure from the readings and answer the following questions: 1) Identify the location, date and materials used in the creation of the work of art you select. 2) Identify the subject matter and style of the work of art.   What is represented- is the image of a man, woman, or a combination of figures?  Is the representation realistic, abstract or a combination of styles? 3) Discuss the function of the work of art.  For example, the Nkisi power sculptures from Kongo may have been used for a variety of purposes depending on how the sculpture was “activated” by a priest.  Please make sure to complete the readings on Central African art before completing this discussion. Also, make sure to view the video in the Module on Nkisi for additional information on the subject.  Thank you!

Testing for Multiple Regression

Instructions: Assignment: Testing for Multiple Regression You had the chance earlier in the course to practice with multiple regression and obtain peer feedback. Now, it is time once again to put all of that good practice to use and answer a social research question with multiple regression. As you begin the Assignment, be sure and pay close attention to the assumptions of the test. Specifically, make sure the variables are metric level variables. Part 1 To prepare for this Part 1 of your Assignment: Review this week 9 and 10 Learning Resources and media program related to multiple regression. Using the SPSS software, open the Afrobarometer dataset or the High School Longitudinal Study dataset (whichever you choose) found in the Learning Resources for this week. Based on the dataset you chose, construct a research question that can be answered with a multiple regression analysis. Once you perform your multiple regression analysis, review Chapter 11 of the Wagner text to understand how to copy and paste your output into your Word document. For this Part 1 Assignment: Write a 1- to 2-page analysis of your multiple regression results for each research question. In your analysis, display the data for the output. Based on your results, provide an explanation of what the implications of social change might be. Use proper APA format, citations, and referencing for your analysis, research question, and display of output. Part 2 To prepare for this Part 2 of your Assignment: Review Warner’s Chapter 12 and Chapter 2 of the Wagner course text and the media program found in this week’s Learning Resources and consider the use of dummy variables. Using the SPSS software, open the Afrobarometer dataset or the High School Longitudinal Study dataset (whichever you choose) found in this week’s Learning Resources. Consider the following: Create a research question with metric variables and one variable that requires dummy coding. Estimate the model and report results. Note: You are expected to perform regression diagnostics and report that as well. Once you perform your analysis, review Chapter 11 of the Wagner text to understand how to copy and paste your output into your Word document. For this Part 2 Assignment: Write a 2- to 3-page analysis of your multiple regression using dummy variables results for each research question. In your analysis, display the data for the output. Based on your results, provide an explanation of what the implications of social change might be. Use proper APA format, citations, and referencing for your analysis, research question, and display of output.

Estimating Models Using Dummy Variables

Instructions:   Discussion: Estimating Models Using Dummy Variables You have had plenty of opportunity to interpret coefficients for metric variables in regression models. Using and interpreting categorical variables takes just a little bit of extra practice. In this Discussion, you will have the opportunity to practice how to recode categorical variables so they can be used in a regression model and how to properly interpret the coefficients. Additionally, you will gain some practice in running diagnostics and identifying any potential problems with the model. To prepare for this Discussion: Review Warner’s Chapter 12 and Chapter 2 of the Wagner course text and the media program found in this week’s Learning Resources and consider the use of dummy variables. Create a research question using the General Social Survey dataset that can be answered by multiple regression. Using the SPSS software, choose a categorical variable to dummy code as one of your predictor variables. Estimate a multiple regression model that answers your research question. Post your response to the following: What is your research question? Interpret the coefficients for the model, specifically commenting on the dummy variable. Run diagnostics for the regression model. Does the model meet all of the assumptions? Be sure and comment on what assumptions were not met and the possible implications. Is there any possible remedy for one the assumption violations? Be sure to support your Main Post and Response Post with reference to the week’s Learning Resources and other scholarly evidence in APA Style.

Hagia Sophia, Istanbul

Lesson on the HAGIA SOPHIA, ISTANBUL: Summarize the information on the architecture and interior in the essay by Dr. William Allen on the Hagia Sophia, Istanbul. (Combine the two sections: (a) video, & (b) text Essay by Dr. William Allen 5+ Topics/ paragraphs including the important points (describe) in each summary for each topic (5+). Describe art and architecture as it appears in each Topic. For each paragraph/topic in the reading, relate important points, topic by topic with a summary, each summary with a line space in-between. A run-on paragraph cannot be graded. Do not cut and paste the reading and then change it because TURNITIN will read it as copying and not as original. Take notes in your own words and then summarize (no quotes). Summaries that are too close to the original text will receive little or no credit. We need to see what you think about what you have read, and viewed. You must be original! Save your original writing and post as a pdf file. Museums in NYC

Follow the link below to find a list of museums in NYC.  Select a museum with your group and complete the following assignment: https://www.ny.com/museums/all.museums.html It has been reported that the museums in NYC will opening in the upcoming weeks.  As with all outdoor activities, please make sure to practice all the protocols with regard to the pandemic.  In the event that the museums do not open, I will revise this assignment.   Students will visit your selected museum, Online or in person.   Peruse the exhibitions, and select one.  Observe it in terms of its location in the museum, the medium used, the artist or designer, the purpose of the designs, and the museum itself.  Keep in mind that all museums are not the same, as each has its own distinctions and personality.  What is your experience of visiting this museum?  Were there any surprises?  Were you disappointed by anything?  How did you find this experience?  Has the pandemic impacted your experience significantly? If so, explain how. Was it an easy or difficult process?   Make sure to identify the your selections by name and include the artist’s name.  Decide on the particular aspects of the exhibit, and determine how you would like to present it.  You may use PowerPoint, Prezi, or any other tool to help you to present your work on Blackboard.  I will open a forum on Discussion Board for you to post your presentations. Students will post their presentations in the designated forum.   Read the following, carefully, to obtain any help in writing about  art:  http://twp.duke.edu/uploads/media_items/painting.original.pdf
