Art Movements

Assignment For this project, you’ll answer seven questions about artists from ten of the art movements you studied throughout your course. You must select one artist from each of the following movements to research:  1. Neoclassicism-Benjamin West, Angelica Kauffman, Antonio Canova, 2. Romanticism-Caspar Friedrich, Henry Fuseli, Théodore Géricault,  3. Impressionism-Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt, Alfred Sisley  4. Post-Impressionism-Pierre Bonnard, Paul Sérusier, Emilé Bernard,  5. Expressionism and Fauvism-Franz Marc, Georges Rouault, André Derain 6. Cubism and Futurism-Sonia Delaunay, Alice Bailly, Gino Severini, 7. Dada and Surrealism-Max Ernst, Hannah Höch, Yves Tanguy, 8. Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art- Cy Twombly, Joan Mitchell, James Rosenquist  9. Minimalism and Post-Minimalism-Robert Ryman, Robert Morris, James Turrell  10. Postmodernism and Deconstructivism-Yasomasa Morimura, Daniel Libeskind, David Salle  Questions Once you’ve selected the 10 artists you would like to focus on, you’ll need to research answers to the following seven questions or question groups:  1. What’s the year of the artist’s birth (and, where applicable, death)?  2. Where was the artist born? Where did he or she create the majority of his or her work (if at a different location than this place of birth)?  3. What medium did the artist use? Did he or she use more than one main medium?  4. Which art movement did the artist contribute to? If he or she contributed to more than one movement, where did this artist make the greatest impact?  5. What are some of the artist’s most famous works of art? Choose one of these works. In what ways is the piece characteristic of the movement specified above? (Include an image of the chosen piece.)  6. What challenges, if any, did the artist face that may have affected his or her work? What was happening in the world at that time that influenced the artist’s work?  7. What’s innovative about the artist’s work for that time period?  You’ll then write an APA-formatted essay that contains a title page, a brief introduction and conclusion, in-text citations supporting your research, and a reference list. Answer each question using complete sentences. The essay should be a minimum of 1,200 words. However, most students finish the project in about 2,000 words. Answer the questions in essay format; do not answer them in list format. You’ll need to find at least one source for each artist from the internet, a library, or elsewhere. Be sure to use reputable sources when searching for information on your selected artists. Your essay should include a cover page and works cited page using APA formatting.

Neolithic Architecture

What are the characteristics of the Neolithic Period? Neolithic cultures have domesticated plants and animals.  Neolithic people lived in sedentary environments because they depended on harvests, food storage, and livestock for subsistence year-round.  These people did not paint deep in caves.  Instead, the Neolithic people in Europe and Western Asia were builders, constructing what we call megalithic architecture. In this assignment you will learn about the Neolithic megalithic architecture of Stonehenge in England.  part 1: Read this Smithsonian.com article on the Neolithic site of Göbekli Tepe. Answers to these two questions to me,    What are the common elements between all three Neolithic sites (Stonehenge, Göbelki Tepe, and ?atalhöyük)?  What about these Neolithic sites, in your opinion, is most remarkable?  this would be just a paragraph long.   part 2: Even though “trying to pick out symbolism from prehistoric context is an exercise in futility,” imagine that you could have one question about these sites answered definitively, as if you had access to an omniscient archaeologist.  What question would you ask? just one question

The Two Baroque Artworks

Image of Bernini’s Ecstasy of St.Teresa: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/3/3e/ Estasi_di_Santa_Teresa.jpg/250px-Estasi_di_Santa_Teresa.jpg Image of Caravaggio’s Crucifixion of St. Peter: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/f7/Caravaggio_-_Martirio_di_San_Pietro.jpg/300px-Caravaggio_-_Martirio_di_San_Pietro.jpg The Protestant Reformation and the Roman Catholic Counter-Reformation had major influences on the Western art world, out of which Baroque art would emerge. Artists and artworks became an essential arm of the church, needed to inspire faith and commitment within an institution that found itself destabilized by this schism. Though Baroque artists continued to use the vocabulary of ancient Greeks and Romans, as had Renaissance artists, there were major shifts in how religious imagery would be depicted. Compare two Baroque artworks, Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s sculpture Ecstasy of St. Teresa with Caravaggio’s painting, Crucifixion of St. Peter, in order to identify and discuss this shift in religious imagery. Again, give a formal analysis of each painting in order to distinguish the different approaches of these two artists, but this time pay close attention to light, movement, and theatricality. Make a brief comparison to Renaissance art in order to illustrate the shift in art periods. Use the required course materials to help you discuss, briefly, (1) the history of Baroque art and these two artists in particular, (2) the role of the church, and (3) how Bernini and Caravaggio differently conveyed faith and commitment to the church. It is important to note that this assignment is your second introduction to Art History and Art Criticism, so it is imperative that you continue to exercise your ability to visually analyze. The required course materials, under “How To Write About Art: Art Criticism and Formal Analysis,” will continue to aid you in developing these skills. Assignment Expectations Here are five keys to writing a great Case Assignment! For each Case in this course, please: Make sure you fully address the case assignment prompt- don’t just describe the painting and don’t forget to ‘really look’ at the painting. Be sure to respond to the expectations stated under “Learning Outcomes” in the Syllabus. Apply ideas from the background readings to your analysis and discussion of the case assignment prompt. Write, at minimum, three to four pages, not including images or references. Include a separate cover page that includes your name, the course name, the module, and assignment name. Set your format to 1″ margins on all four sides, 12-point font, double-spaced. Include a separate cover AND reference page at the end that includes every website and article on which you base your information and analysis. In the reference list, please note that a URL with no additional information is not a complete reference. Over time, link root will make any URL useless. Each reference should contain all the information a reader would need to find the source. In this Case Assignment, you will: Give an explanation of the values—influences, themes, techniques, subjects—characteristic of the period or style under study. Give some information about how the social, political, or religious history of the period influenced its art and artists. Provide biographical information about the artist whose work is assigned or (in SLP assignments) chosen for reflection.
