Music and Dance

Music and dance are similar, because both are able to communicate ideas and emotions without the use of words. In the absence of a vocal component, musicians create sounds that evoke certain emotions. Composers and performers do this through different elements of music like melody, harmony, and rhythm. Dancers can also communicate emotions, ideas, or even a story through their movements, and these movements are often tied to musical elements like rhythm. Imagine you are composing a ballet. Pick an emotion you want to show the audience.  Describe how you would use certain elements of music to create the sounds of that emotion.  How would you choreograph the dancers to align with your musical ideas?

Writing a Play

you should watch the play from Chabot College. Your original post should be about 200 words The plays you use for reports must have been seen no earlier than one month before the semester started. A play that you saw SEVEN months ago, for example, will not be accepted for these assignments. Music concerts and Dance concerts cannot be used for these assignments. The name of the Play The name of the theater where you saw the play COPY AND PASTE THE LINK TO WHATEVER SHOW YOU WATCH AND GIVE THE NAME OF THE THEATER WHERE THE PERFORMANCE WAS HELD OR THE NAME OF THE GROUP DOING THE SHOW. The Date you saw the play The Playwright’s name (2 points) The Director’s name (2 points) A brief synopsis of what the play was about (three or four sentences) (3 points) Choose ONE of the design elements of the play. You can talk about either the set, lights, costumes or sound (please note that sound design does NOT refer to how the actors use their voices, how loud they are or any of that. Sound design for purposes of this assignment, refers to added sound that is part of the story telling. In your program their should be a sound designer listed. You are analyzing his/her work, not the work of the actors. Sound, for purposes of this report, also DOES NOT mean the music being played as part of a musical. In other words, the work of the actors and the musicians is different than the work of the Sound Designer. For this report focus on the work of the Sound Designer). Give a brief description of what you saw or heard. Talk about why the design choices either worked or didn’t work for the play you saw. Be specific. Avoid just saying things like “I liked it”, or “I didn’t like it.” Give details and explain how they supported, or didn’t support, the play you saw. Choose only ONE design element to focus on. I want you to choose only one element of design to encourage you to go more in depth in your analysis. It is very easy to talk about three different things and give one quick sentence about each. That is not what I am asking for. I would like you to really look at the design you are choosing and make what connections you can as to how those design choices supported or did not support the show you watched. Remember that everyone who participates in putting on a play is a story teller in their own way, and they are all trying to help tell the same story. So think about and write about whether or not the design you choose helped tell the story, or not, and how it achieved this, or, where it missed. Be as specific as you can. (10 points) NOTE THAT THIS QUESTION IS WORTH 10 POINTS. THAT’S 25% OF ALL OF THE POSSIBLE POINTS FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT. PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE DIRECTIONS GIVEN ABOVE. Overall, what are your thoughts and feelings about your experience seeing this show?

The Development of Artistic Style

Often, when a person is shown a painting or sculpture, they can have an immediate reaction such as “I like it” or “I hate it!” But the real question is, “Why do we feel the way we do?” Studying the elements of visual art can help you make a more informed and interesting response. Also, knowing a little about the development of artistic style through the centuries helps you put your opinions in context.   Pick at least one of the elements of composition, and explain why it is important when describing a work of art. Cite some examples of painting or sculpture that emphasize this element.

What’s Your Wicked Problem?

Here my wicked problem is “Mandated cultural diversity Vs Social diversity and acceptance”. Please number the answers as listed below. 1. What is the contemporary global issue or problem (social, cultural, or environmental) you intend to research? Your topic must be grounded in contemporary research and practice. Write the problem as a statement (one sentence). Example: Access to safe water is a basic human need that is not being met in much of the world today.   2. How does this problem relate to your academic and professional journeys? You need to demonstrate how your topic relates to the experiences and concepts you’ve learned in academic classes and through professional work. This project should show focus and depth of knowledge about a field or discipline, so explaining this connection of your topic to what you’ve learned in your courses and work is very important. Example: The right to access safe water relates to Environmental Studies (the discipline in which I have taken the most courses, and where I plan to work in the future) in that industrial and agricultural policies lead to pollution and depletion areas.  3. Why is this global problem significant? Explain why others should care, and the impact it has on world-wide populations. Properly cite at least one credible source of evidence to support your answer and provide an APA formatted reference for your citation. Example: Depletion of fresh water is a dire consequence of population growth, climate change, and modern industrial and agricultural practices. A huge percentage of the human population already has little to no access to clean fresh water, so it is already a quality of life issue that could easily factor into global unrest.  4. What role do issues of cultural diversity play in your global problem? Explain specific examples that have helped to cause the problem and/or can be part of the solution. Properly cite at least one credible source of evidence to support your answer and provide an APA formatted reference for your citation.

moralizing

Consider Diderot’s views of the “moralizing” art of Chardin. Can art affect its viewers’ actions or moral decisions? If so, does the artist have an obligation to act as a moralizing influence?  Can you think of relevant parallels in recent art, literature, music or television?

Understanding of Art

LESSON 5 FIRST: Read through our text on drawing and listen to the posted lecture on drawing. SECOND: Watch the attached two videos. One on William Kentridge, and the other one on drawing. THIRD: For this response I want you to use a cheap bic-style pen and make two drawings. Here are the rules for the drawings: Drawing 1: 1. Grab a single piece of fruit. I suggest an apple, a banana, an orange, a pear… just something familiar.  2. Use the pen, and your eyes, to make a fully rendered/modeled drawing of the piece of fruit. DO NOT WORK FROM A PHOTO! Try to shade the object. Try cross hatching, repeating tiny circles, or laying in flat planes of tone. Try to make it look real, and remember to include a cast shadow. Also, remember the more marks the better. Make it dense! Drawing 2: Take a 30 min break. Maybe watch one of the videos??? 1. Now, I would like you to take out another sheet of paper and make a drawing of the same fruit from memory. See how much of the visual information you have retained.  *They will graded on effort and time, not skill. Fourth: Write on one of the drawings, or another piece of paper, what you think is the most important part of William Kentridge’s artwork and include it with your drawings. I will link in the video and I drew a banana incase you want to mention it William Kentridge Interview: How We Make Sense of the World Let me know if you can not find the videp
