Working in business management means taking on responsibility to lead your organization in a variety of situations. Part of that responsibility is understanding where an organization has been and where it’s going. In this course, you put yourself in the shoes of a manager and use resources to make decisions on where an organization is heading in respect to business needs, organizational structure, leadership strategies, and change management. Some of the information needed may be easy to locate, but other information may take time and effort to find. Some may even need assumptions based on research. Part One: Active Constructive Responding to Myself: Research on positive psychology shows that noticing and focusing on positive things that happen to you each day increases your happiness and life satisfaction. If we practice this on a repeated basis, our brain develops neuroplasticity or is rewired to see glass mostly as half full, rather than half empty. The habit of noticing the positive aspect of life may lead to better long term health, greater resilience, ability to recognize more opportunities, and increased leadership skills. Notice five things that went well each week and write them down in your journal by the end of each week. These five things might be in any aspect of life you care about: school, relationships, work, weather, sports, hobbies. Part Two: Active Constructive Responding to Others: Google managers have found out that grateful Google employees tend to have better long term job satisfaction compared with employees who are low on gratitude scale. Research on positive psychology shows that writing a gratitude letter increases one’s sense of happiness/life satisfaction. Please write a short letter or email to somebody who has supported or inspired you, overcame a challenge, did something nice for you or someone else, or just was a positive person. It might be a parent, a friend, a coworker, a teacher, a coach, a professor, coworkers, etc. Make a copy of this letter in your journal (you may change names/anonymize if this contains private information). You don’t have to send the letter/email to the recipient, but you might enjoy doing so! Choose a different person each week. Part Three: Building One’s Strategic Network Meet somebody new during the week who might become a part of your future strategic network. It might be an individual at an employer booth or career fair, somebody you met at a networking event, somebody from your place of employment, etc. It could also be a classmate or anybody who is interested in networking and connecting with you. Briefly mention what you learned from this person and what you found interesting about them.

Instructions: This project requires you to develop a PowerPoint slide presentation for use as a training tool with brand new supervisors! You are in charge of presenting them on information on how to transition from a worker to a supervisor. There is great satisfaction in taking a brand new employee, helping them to develop their Management, Coaching and Leadership skills, and then watching them excel! With this in mind, your presentation should have and title slide, an overview and body of slides for the audience. You should focus the majority of your presentation (i.e., 8-10 slides) on what challenges a new supervisor may face, what makes a good supervisor (or bad one) and how to transition to becoming a supervisor. Factors to consider in all forms of communication–Who is your audience? What is your message? Are you trying to persuade? Inform? Here are some guidelines to get you started: You are the Lead Shift Supervisor and are going to brief a small group of newly promoted team leads with little or no past leadership experience. They have all worked up through the ranks at the Bad Teddy Bear Manufacturing Facility. Your audience ages are anywhere from 25-35 years of age, with various business backgrounds, some with military experience, and some that have been in a little trouble before but now want to move up in the company. Many of them have good friends still “on the line” and will may have a struggle adjusting. Have fun with some of the topics and graphics of course! There should be an introduction slide, a topic overview slide, 8-10 slides on presentation techniques, a conclusion slide and lastly a reference slide.
