Diversity, Benefits, and Detriments of Microbes
Diversity, Benefits and Detriments of Microbes Microbiology is both a basic and an applied science. It is not a single subject! It has many areas of specialization, including bacteriology, mycology (study of fungi), phycology (study of algae), virology, medical microbiology & immunology, public health, food microbiology, biotechnology, microbial genetics, and cell & molecular biology. In this assignment, we will discuss some of the various disciplines associated with microbiology and the beneficial microbes associated with them. Feel free to download the Week One Discussion assignment instructions and Grading Rubric . For your main discussion post (first post), You must choose from among the beneficial organisms below. It is required of all students to reserve their discussion topic using the following procedure: Click Week 1 Discussion, above, to enter the Discussion. Click Create Thread and type the number and scientific name of the organism you will discuss in the subject line to reserve your topic on a first come/first serve basis according to the classroom date/time stamp. Repeat main posts on the same organism are not permitted. To post your main discussion you will Reply to your topic intent post. Please choose one of the following beneficial microbes for your main discussion: Acetobacter aceti Alcanivorax borkumensis Arthrospira platensis Aspergillus niger Bacillus thuringiensis Bifidobacterium infantis Brettanomyces bruxellensis Deinococcus radiodurans Dunaliella salina Escherichia coli Geobacter metallireducens Ideonella sakaiensis Lactobacillus acidophilus Lactobacillus gasseri Oenococcus oeni Paenibacillus polymyxa Penicillium camemberti Penicillium chrysogenum Pseudomonas putida Rhizobium leguminosarum Saccharomyces cerevisiae Shewanella oneidensis Sinorhizobium meliloti Streptomyces griseus Synechococcus elongatus Thiomargarita namibiensis D. You must discuss your chosen organism to tell us what type of microbe it is, what helpful beneficial actions it performs and which subfield of microbiology it is involved in. You must discuss only the helpful, beneficial, positive aspects of your chosen organism for your entire main discussion. E. Your discussion should be well-written, in your own words, paraphrasing from only credible academic sources. You may not directly quote from your sources, minimum elaboration on the topic of a minimum of 300 words and maximum of 400 words. F. The Vitamin Deficiency or Toxicity
Figure out the vitamin deficiency or toxicity from which the patient is suffering from. Explain what made you draw conclusions. What is the normal role of the vitamin in the cell / body? Examples Mary and the red tounge While working in an extremely impoverished area of the world where the primary (and some days, the only substantial) food source is corn, you are approached by Mary, a young woman who has the largest, reddest tounge you’ve seen you agree to examine her because she complains of other symptoms. During the examination, you notice a rash that is particularly prominent on the areas of her body most often exposed to sun, her neckline and hands. The woman also complains of feeling depressed and apathetic, suffering from memory loss, and having frequent diarrhea. Answer : I suspect that Mary has a vitamin B3 (Niacin) deficiency and is suffering from pellagra. The key symptoms that lead me to this conclusion are her red tounge, rash in sun – exposed areas, her diarrhea, and confusion. I can differentiate the niacin deficiency from a riboflavin deficiency ( which also has a red tounge) because of the rash, diarrhea, and the clue that Mary eats a lot of corn. Corn contains niacin that is tightly bound to other proteins ; however, the niacin can be released if corn is exposed to alkaline conditions before consumption. 1. Differentiation Between Qualitative and Quantitative Research
Prior to beginning work on this discussion forum, please read the article by Barnham (2015), Quantitative and Qualitative Research: Perceptual Foundations, and the article by Rutberg and Bouikidis (2018), Focusing on the Fundamentals: A Simplistic Differentiation Between Qualitative and Quantitative Research Links to an external site. . Watch the Qualitative vs. Quantitative (Links to an external site.) video, and participate in the interactivity How to Read a Scholarly Article (Links to an external site.) , as well as the embedded video Identifying and Finding Quantitative and Qualitative Research (Links to an external site.) . Refer to the APA Formatting Template (Links to an external site.) to help you correctly cite journal articles. This discussion forum is the first part of a two-part integration. The peer and instructor feedback you receive in this discussion forum will be integrated and submitted in this weeks written assignment. You must provide feedback on your peers initial posts by Day 5 of this week. Begin to gather background information about the topic of interest and the research focus you identified in Week 1. This is the beginning of developing an understanding of the topic and a prelude to narrowing the topic. Identify three peer-reviewed academic journal articles that report on qualitative research studies that address the research topic or research focus of interest to you. In an initial post of at least 300 words that incorporates and cites information from at least two required resources, Identify and provide a complete APA citation for three articles that report on qualitative research studies that address your research topic or research focus. Consider accessing the Ashford Writing Centers Formatting Your References List (Links to an external site.) for more on completing a complete reference citation. Append your three articles to your initial discussion form post by Day 3. The simplest way to post more than one file to a Canvas discussion is to zip the multiple files together and then upload them as a single file in your discussion post. Follow the How to Create and Open Zip Files on PC and Mac (Links to an external site.) for step-by-step instructions for zipping and unzipping files on either a PC or a Mac. Identify the characteristics of each article that tell you the study is a qualitative research study, and not a quantitative research study, citing at least two required resources. Assess how these three studies are useful in helping you develop a better understanding of your topic of interest or your research focus, and what you learned from each study. Guided Response: Answer any questions your instructor has about your initial post. Review several of your classmates posts, prioritizing those who have not received feedback, and respond to at least two of your classmates posts by Day 5. Each of your responses to your classmates should be at least 100 words in length. Indicate whether you agree that the studies identified by your classmate are qualitative research studies. Provide specific information to reinforce your assessment. Reflect on your classmates appraisal of the usefulness of each study. You are encouraged to post your required replies early in the week to provide opportunities for interaction and further discourse within this forum. Continue to monitor the discussion forum through Day 7, and respond with robust dialogue to anyone who replies to your initial post. Compile your instructors and classmates feedback and navigate to this weeks assignment to complete Part 2.

Read through the instructions prior to beginning this assignment. Select a particular historical event that you have encountered in the course of your research for your term paper. The subject of your timeline entry does not need to be an event per se. It could feature a historical figure or institution, but it should explain what this person did or what happened in the institution named. Try to make the subject of your entry as specific as possible. For instance, rather than the medicine in World War I, you might look into Harold Gilliess establishment of a unit in Queen Marys hospital dedicated to reconfiguring facial injuries sustained in the war. Describe the event. Be sure to indicate its relevance to medical history and to situate the event in its broader social or cultural context. Seek factors within this context that may help to explain why the event occurred when and where it did. Your description and analysis must be at least 250 words in length. To receive credit, you must also include your own name at the top of your description. Include an image relevant to the specific subject of your entry or its broader context if one is available. The Wellcome Collections and Wikimedia Commons are both fine sources of copyright-free images. You still must attribute the image according to the credit line listed on the website and provide a link to the image. Cite any sources of information you used in preparing your timeline slide with a complete bibliographic entry. Please use either APA or Chicago formats for your citations.
