While most people can identify the issues affecting American families, not many people understand what goes into the development of family policy, let alone agree on what the role of government should be regarding families. Reading about these topics can sometimes leave us with this sense of not knowing what to do next.     Pick one option from below. Complete the option, do not just turn in a reflection on what you might choose. Your project from start to finish will be a 10 hour commitment throughout the term.    Service-Learning Issue Area: Create awareness of conflict arising from the intersections of privilege, power, and difference Direct: This option is not available due to COVID-19. Indirect: Watch an event (such as a rally or a speech) in which the participants and organizers do not share your cultural background. Without interviewing anyone, what conflicts do you notice? What are the positions and interests in these conflicts? Advocacy: Create a program that addresses privilege power,and difference in conflict. This project can double with something you are already involved in with another organization. Research: Locate a letter to the editor or opinion piece from the time period of one of the articles from the first part of the Service Learning. What is the conflict according to the author in the piece you selected? What are the positions and interests of each party involved? How does privilege inform the positions and interests? identify a current organization that cares about what you just wrote. Consider interviewing the organization staff as a source for the final question. Ask them if they could think of a way to use your paper, e.g. in their newsletter, as a letter to the editor, etc What present day issues are similar to the issues intertwined in these populations?

He has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis that is now in remission. Identify the aptitude required for successful performance of this job. Cultural Immersion Project

Each student will participate in an experiential activity that will give insight into another culture.(I am African American so please choose a group other than mine) The purpose of the immersion is to heighten your awareness of a diverse group, so you should pick the type of experience that will give you the most potential for personal development. Obviously, papers will vary based on students’ experiences. You could attend a religious service different from your own, volunteer to assist at an event that has a culture predominately different from your own, spend a night with a family of a different culture, visit another country, etc. The expectation is to interact in this environment, not simply observe. Also, make note of your feelings during this experience. From your experience you should write a 4-5 page report including: 1) a summary of the event 2) your feelings before, during, and after the immersion experience 3) discuss cultural strengths, attitudes, beliefs of the diverse group you discovered; 4) discuss attitudes, beliefs you brought into the experience (reflection of self-awareness, personal biases, stereotypes, etc.) 5) describe what counseling approach and culturally appropriate strategies you would select if working with someone from this culture for counseling students OR describe what strategies/approaches you would use to address needs of the culture in your setting (higher education, work, coaching practice, etc)
