Commentary 4 – Putin, North Korea, and Iran

Instruction: Special attention will be given to analyzing/criticizing the documentary. I already know what the documentaries are about. Tell me what they got wrong, could have done better, etc. or provide some thoughts about how they relate to other questions/issues in foreign policy. Focus on the politics/policy in each documentary. Are there errors? In what ways is the documentary misleading? What have you gleaned from the readings, for example, that could allow you to more critically assess the claims presented in the documentary? What policy implications are suggested by the documentary? Do you accept these recommendations? Why or why not? Leadership and Organizations

Primary Task Response: Within the Discussion Board area, write 400–600 words that respond to the following questions with your thoughts, ideas, and comments. This will be the foundation for future discussions by your classmates. Be substantive and clear, and use examples to reinforce your ideas: The U.S. Constitution clearly limits the authority of the federal government. The Stafford Act assigns primacy for disaster management to state and local governments, providing the federal government a supportive role. Is this appropriate for 21st-century risks? Does a terrorist attack require a different relationship and assignment of responsibility?  The incident command system (ICS) was born from the needs of the wild-land firefighting community. Do you think that it is applicable and useable as it exists for terrorist attacks and hurricanes as well?  The National Incident Management System (NIMS) established ICS as the incident management model that all jurisdictions in the United States should use. Though the federal government lacks the authority to mandate its use, Congress has repeatedly required that the adoption of NIMS and the use of ICS is a prerequisite for eligibility for all federal homeland security monies. Is this a fair practice? The city of New York is the sole jurisdiction in the United States to design its own incident management system (city incident management system or CIMS). The federal government recognizes CIMS as an allowable incident management system under NIMS. Should other jurisdictions be allowed to create their own system or modify ICS to meet their needs as well? What are the benefits, and what might be the negative aspects of a patchwork of various versions of ICS being used across the nation?

Compare the Java and .NET Programming Languages

My topic is:  Compare the Java and .NET programming languages “The future of software development is now expected to be a near 50-50 split between Java and .Net. When making a decision on which technology to bank on, you should really research what types of companies use which technology, and which fits into your career aspirations. Java and .Net overlap in a lot of markets and inevitably each will form definitive niches that will be hard to break until newer model-based programming technologies take over.” Payton Byrd, Java vs .Net – The Professional Software Developer’s Survival Guide **(Below are the instructions from the professor: Your proposal must include: a paragraph (or, more likely more than one) describing the project (the bulk of the text), identifying the audience, and describing your research sources an outline of the paper (a preliminary outline with sufficient detail to allow me to understand your aims, scope, and depth) What I’ll be looking for in your proposal is whether you have: selected an appropriate topic described the topic in sufficient detail for me to know what you are planning to do (the outline will support this) defined a realistic scope – not too large that it cannot be done within the time frame yet large enough that it is worthy of credit identified appropriate research sources (I expect you to follow-up on material you find, thus to go beyond the sources you identify) I review the project proposals to help you (I don’t grade you on them, although it is a required step and approval is necessary). What format? The format that you use for this paper should follow standard conventions for a business report (double spaced, 12 pitch, one-inch margins all around, in-text citations, reference list). An excellent source for specifics is Diana Hacker’s A Writer’s Reference. Pages 306-324 of Hacker (third edition, 1995) include parts of a sample paper. Another information source worth exploring is ESC’s virtual writing center, The Writer’s Complex. Your paper should include: An executive summary Introduction Exposition Conclusion Appendices (if appropriate) Endnotes References Your paper should follow a standard format. The two most common are APA (American Psychological Association) and MLA (Modern Language Association). How long? In answer to the anticipated question: How long should my research paper be? be certain that it is long enough to have said everything you need to say and not one word longer. If you still need more guidance and if you feel that length of paper is directly correlated with seriousness of intent, unless you are very parsimonious of speech (to the point that you think that Hemingway is a windbag) you will most likely need somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 pages of double-spaced text (cover sheets, appendixes, bibliographies, and the like are all above and beyond this count) to adequately present your findings. Does that mean that 8 pages isn’t long enough or that 12 pages is too long? Not everyone’s writing style is the same. Again, your best guide is: Have I said everything I needed to say?

War Become less Common than in the Past

THIS IS AN ARGUEMENTITIVE AND OPINIONATED ESSAY SO I NEED THE WRITES OPINION WRITTEN WITH CIRITCAL THINKING Essay structure: The paper should have a clear introduction (under 1 page), ‘body’ paragraphs laying out your arguments with evidence and analysis (roughly 1-2 pages in length per sub-point), and a conclusion that restates your argument. Write clearly and in straightforward language; let your brilliant ideas shine through. (And yes, edit many times before submission)  Instructions and pointers:  Answer the question of the topic you’ve chosen. Any sentence (or paragraphs) in the paper that is not answering the essay question should be cut. Stay focused. Use at least 2 or max 4 sub-points to make your argument. These essay topics are all some version of a ‘why’ question, so they must have ‘because’-type reasons (see below for examples). This argument (thesis statement) should be written clearly in the introduction and repeated in the conclusion. Take a firm stance on the question; persuade the reader of your argument, but also be humble and show that there is another side (or sides) to your argument. The bulk of your paper (‘body’ paragraphs) should be devoted to your argument and those sub-points, but the best papers include some counterarguments (e.g. statements or ideas countering your argument). Your argument MUST BE FRAMED WITH AT LEAST TWO IR THEORY AND RELATED CONCEPTS, though your essay should also mention at least one other IR theory (especially in the counter-arguments). Your paper should stay at a 5,000 foot level; in other words, you can discuss specific cases, issues or events from history or the news, but the reason for this must be 1) to answer the central essay question and 2) to bolster your argument, which must include at least one IR theory. In other words, don’t get lost in the woods; this paper isn’t about telling the reader everything you know or really getting into specific detail about one particular event in international relations.
