Applying Amazon best practices to government organization. – Evaluate an Amazon best practice that addresses a leadership, management, transformation, or organizational culture issue and has utility in government organization. Address the following with a minimum of 1-page for each section. 1. Problem Identification: Discuss the leadership challenge, transformation, culture and/or problem set (i.e., what types of problems were being addressed using the best practice); 2. Best Practice: Evaluate the best practice(s) relating to the leadership or management area and how the best practice was implemented (include key elements of the best practice); 3. Application to leadership and management literature: Assess which leadership, motivational, organizational theories or change management approaches are applicable to the best practice. 4. Application to U.S. government organization in national security, intelligence, or law enforcement (eg. DNI or DHS).  [What issues are similar to the problems addressed by the best practice?  How could the best practice be applied?  Are there any challenges or barriers to implementation (structure, culture, people, legal, etc.)?  If so, how can they be overcome – Minimum 8 sources with footnotes and bibliography

Question 1 You have been offered an opportunity to interview for an internship with a company that is on your target list. The interview is on Wednesday at 10 AM on the north side of town. On Tuesday, you receive an offer from your top choice company to interview on the same day at 11 AM. The companies are 45 minutes apart by car. This is your dream opportunity; however, you have already made a commitment to the other company. What do you do? The final paper is due tomorrow and the student still has not finished the paper, but the supervisor of the internship has requested that he/she join the team out at a local restaurant to celebrate the finalization of the project. Faced with this dilemma, what should the student do? (limit 200 words) Question 3 For the first time in many years the basketball team has made it to the championship game. In order for a player to be eligible they must have a “C” grade average. A few days prior to the game the coach learns that his two-star players have dropped below the required grade average. According to policy, they should be suspended from the team but, if they are suspended, they won’t play in the championship and the whole team is depending on them. What should the coach do? (limit 200 words. Question 4 A student is selected as Class President and is scheduled to accept the position and speak to the entire student body on Friday. On Wednesday it is discovered that the student has not completed a self-study course requirement that is mandatory for all student senate representatives. The course takes a week to be completed. Given that the student has not started the coursework and will not be able to finish before the announcement on Friday, please describe what actions should be taken in order to resolve the situation. Identify 1 individual in the community (campus, neighborhood, place of worship, non-profit, etc.) who you think exemplifies an organizational “problem-solver” and schedule a meeting (for safety, virtual is recommended). Formulate your questions in advance. In your interview, try to gain a greater understanding of the person’s roles, how they view leadership/problem-solving, and then expand on how these individuals carry out their practice. Please note that this paper should not take Q&A form but be a well-written, well-formed analysis essay integrating course readings. Details will be provided. Length (does not include cover or references): ~8 pages. Please include, at a minimum, the following in the paper: Please provide some information about the people you interviewed. For example, professional/educational background, current role, leadership practice, why you chose this person, and/or information about the organization for which he/she works. Explain to your interviewee a bit about the key elements of the course that resonate with you most or challenge you most – what advice does this person have for you given their experiences? (you will cite readings here) How does this person approach trying to influence change in their professional context?  What works? What would he/she caution you against? This week complete the issue of proposal.  An issue proposal which is a paper establishing what topic you have chosen, why you have chosen it, and what information you need to research. The Issue Proposal is a 4 page assignment which introduces your issue, explains why it is compelling to you, describes what you already know about it, details what more you need to learn about the issue, explains why you think it is important or significant, and expresses any opinions you have about your issue –whether you are for or against it, etc. Do some background reading on your topic to make sure that you find enough information on it and to get a general idea of it. Your background reading should consist of credible sources such as journal articles, magazine articles, books, reputable websites, etc. Write a 4 page issue proposal (2000 – 2500 words) paper addressing the following five items.  THIS PAPER DOES NOT NEED DOCUMENTED MATERIAL.  EVERYTHING IN THIS PAPER SHOULD BE YOUR THOUGHTS, QUESTIONS, AND OPINIONS ONLY. Introduce the issue.  Frame the argument, and briefly describe the two basic opposing viewpoints. Explain why it is relevant now. End this item by presenting the issue in question form. Explain why the issue is compelling or interesting to you. Why do you want to write a paper on it? Briefly describe what you already know about it. If you do not know much about the issue, just say so. Do not make up information about it or plagiarize information about it from some source. Just provide general information or common knowledge reported in the news and so on, not specific facts or statistics that you would need to consult some source to learn. Explain what else you need to learn about the issue in order to write a persuasive research paper about it. Clearly state which position you plan to take on the issue in your paper. For instance, if your paper topic is sports gambling, and you are personally against sports gambling and plan to argue against it in your paper, state this. Conversely, if you are in favor of sports gambling and plan to argue that it is necessary, state this. This position will form the basis of the thesis you will attempt to prove in your research paper. The thesis is the main point you want to make and prove in your paper. If you think sports gambling should be done away with argue this point in your paper, then this viewpoint would inform your thesis.  You do not have to stick to this position. In fact, is common for students to modify their views or positions on issues as they conduct research on the issue. Each paragraph of the paper should address one of these items. You may do some research in the process of selecting a paper topic. If you do learn some specific facts or statistics about your topic from your preliminary research, save them for the research paper. The object of this issue proposal is for you to introduce your topic to me and tell me what you already know about it, what you would like to know about it, why it is important or interesting to you, and your position on the issue if you have one. Since this paper should not incorporate any research material, it does not need to be documented with citations. If you use any material from a source in your paper without citing it, this constitutes plagiarism, which will result in a failing grade.

Public Leadership and Diversity Instructions Write a 4–5 page paper in which you: Define what a public leader is. Cite experiences and research to support your assertions. Based on your readings, describe and develop an overview of two public leaders—one male and one female—that embody your ideal of a public leader and the leadership theories and styles that they manifest. Reflect on the events of the 1990s and the tremendous social and governmental changes that happened at that time. Discuss the roles of Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, and F. W. de Klerk in facilitating change, recognizing diversity, and leading courageously. Discuss gender diversity in the workplace, including the increasing numbers of women in the workplace and leadership positions. If you’ve ever had a leader of another gender, discuss the pros and cons of your experience. Suggest one key strength or weakness that could influence your ability to be a public leader. Include at least four peer-reviewed references (at least one must be no more than 3 months old) from material outside the textbook. Note: Appropriate peer-reviewed references include scholarly articles and government websites. Wikipedia, other wikis, and websites ending in anything other than “.gov” do not qualify as academic resources. This course requires the use of Strayer Writing Standards. Unit IV Reflection Paper Given the two theories discussed in this unit (LMX and transformational), reflect on situations in which you have seen both employed. Reflect on how you perceived both theories manifested in each specific situation. Write a reflection paper sharing your insights and viewpoints on both theories. Discuss the effectiveness of the theories as you saw them applied. include your own self-analysis of how you might have performed in each of the situations. The Leader-Member Exchange (LMX 7) Questionnaire on page 157 and the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire on page 191 of your textbook are good places to start to promote self-analysis in these areas Your reflection paper will be a minimum of two pages, not counting the title and reference pages. You must use at least two sources, one of which may be your textbook to support your reflection. All sources used must have proper citations. Your paper, including all references, will be formatted in APA style 7.

Paper Requirements: Select 2 (TWO) EL options – I have made some suggestions below, but you can select an experience of your choice. The paper will be comprised of 3 sections: Section 1 (~2-3 pages total): For EL 1, craft a reflection in accordance with our Guidelines. See attachment. Section 2 (~2-3 pages total): For EL 2, craft a reflection in accordance with Guidelines Section 3 (~3 pages total): Compare/contrast the 2 ELs experiences. How are they different? What elements of ethics and leadership do/don’t they address? How? What assumptions do each make? What voices are privileged? Silenced? Which is the better representation of ethics and leadership? Why? Here is a guide to compare/contrast writing. Use class readings to back up your claims! The paper must reference, at least, 10 class readings/videos or other scholarly work. Please use appropriate APA citation.
