The End of the Civil War

Write a response to one (1) of the following essay topics. Make sure that you answer one of the prompts provided. Do not ignore the focus of the question as you write on the topic you pick. Make sure to use evidence from the book assigned for this class and materials presented in class to support your argument. When you are done, this will look like a “traditional” essay with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. I recommend that you approach this essay using the techniques you learned in the first two assignments. Start by finding evidence. You will need at least six (6) quotes for this essay to support an interpretation – do not decide on your response before you do the research. Then go on to write your topic sentences, followed by an introduction. Once that is done you fill out each paragraph to help the reader follow your logic and thinking about each step in the essay. Each paragraph should be structured as follows: Topic sentence; set up the quotation; quotation; and explanation of how the quotation supports your argument. Make sure there is only one piece of evidence for each paragraph. TOPICS TO CHOOSE FROM 1 – Franklin Roosevelt instituted the New Deal to implement innovative economic ideas or relief, recovery and reform to end the Great Depression. First, you need to define how FDR’s approach was intended to end the Great Depression, and then go on to discuss at least at least three New Deal programs to show how they embodied the principles of relief, recovery and reform. 2 – For many people, the United States has always gone to war to help other countries; we fight wars for moral causes. Others believe the United States enters conflicts out of economic self-interest. Write an essay that argues for one of these two perspectives. You must find evidence from the Spanish American War, World War II and the Cold War to support your interpretation. 2 – African Americans have struggled to find equal treatment and opportunity ever since the end of the Civil War. Write an essay that discusses the two approaches – assimilation and black nationalism – from Reconstruction through the 1920’s. Example of a paragraph for assignment 3 PARAGRAPH IS IN RESPONSE TO THE PROMPT: The American Revolution was caused by a growing conflict between British policies and colonial views of the basic independence of colonial governments. PARAGRAPH – Topic sentence, set up to quote, quote, and explanation of the quote. The new economically-motivated laws passed by Parliament – The Townshend Acts – served to further anger colonists because of their assaults on local political control. Aimed at undermining colonial legislatures, this Act created an independent revenue source to compensate the colonial governors that were appointed by the Kind. “The Townshend Acts produced controversy and protest in the American colonies. For a second time, many colonists resented what they perceived as an effort to tax them without representation and thus to deprive them of their liberty. The fact that the revenue the Townshend Acts raised would pay royal governors only made the situation worse, because it took control away from colonial legislatures that otherwise had the power to set and withhold a royal governor’s salary.” The ongoing British assault on colonial self-determination, a power which the colonists argued was based on their right to be part of Parliament’s legislative process. Parliament, however, was simply ignoring the colonist’s rights as members of the British Empire by passing this new piece of repressing taxation.

American Government

It has long been argued, particularly by conservatives, that there is a liberal bias in the mass media. On the other hand, progressives and liberals counter that conservative media has its own bias and that conservative media spends most of its time trying to invoke fear and division in the general public. With these two points of view in mind, please respond to the following question. (1) How is the media, biased, more towards progressive-liberal values, conservative values or in both directions depending on the specific media outlets you may access? Explain your response. (2) Find two or more examples of media bias (video clip, article, images) and attach to your Dropbox submission. Explain in detail how these example/s represent media bias and the impact that it has on public opinion. As part of your research and examination of media bias include recent polling data results showing the public’s confidence in the objectivity or fairness of the media. Problem of Shakespeare

The Annotated Bibliography assignment asks you to conduct research on some area or problem of Shakespeare/ early modern studies that interests you. The research that you are doing for the annotated bibliography should be on sources that you will use in Essay 2.  This annotated bibliography will consist of five sources. Use the FSU library (library collection of books and ebooks, JSTOR, Literature Resource Center, and MLA International Bibliography) to find sources. Google Books and Google Scholar can also be useful, but these tend to access previews, rather than full text sources. Please do not use sources accessed any other way.  For each entry, do the following: 1. Cite the source correctly in MLA format.  2. Describe the approach (or approaches) to literary criticism that the writers seem to take. How do you know this?  3. Describe the main claim made in the source. In complex arguments, explaining this idea may take some space.  4. Explain how the sources uses one or more of Shakespeare’s plays (and/or some other early modern primary source).  One effective way to find sources is to read the footnotes and citations of material that you have already read. I would like you to do this for at least one of the sources that you include in the annotated bibliography. In other words, we have read a few critical essays and we have seen that these essays make use of a dense web of additional sources. Find and read one of these sources. Include it in your annotated bibliography so that you can incorporate it into your final essay. Make sure to indicate which source you mined from one of our critical essays–identify the essay where you found it.

The Civil War Affect the Environment

Stage 2 Overview: After you have a good, clear question you will start doing research in order to answer that question. At every moment in this stage, think consciously about how you can apply our class “toolkit.” A good historian does not just look for evidence specifically focused on or directly trying to answer their question; instead, a good historian zooms out from their specific question, and explores the bigger-picture context tied to their specific question. In the discipline of History, the “bigger-picture context” usually implies two things: the broader time period connected to the question, and the general theme/category of the topic that the question falls into. Here’s an example with a sample question:   Question: Why were so many Americans opposed to giving women the right to vote? What were they afraid of? Why was it that many women didn’t think they should have the right to vote? Time Period: 1890s-1920s Theme/Category: Women’s History/Gender History (or you could go in a different direction and explore the general topic of the history of the suffrage movement—not just for women but generally how suffrage—the right to vote—was expanded for all different kinds of people over American history).   So for this question you would need to do some general research that gives you an overview on the main events of the 1890s-1920s, and an overview either on the history of Women in the United States, or a history of the suffrage movement in the United States. The point of this stage of research is to obtain a better understanding of the “entry points” for your question—in other words, what are the openings that lead you in the direction of answering your question. Starting on a general level allows you to make connections between cause and effect that won’t happen if you start out too focused. For example, if you are exploring the question above, if you just research women’s history you wouldn’t know that this was when the anti-slavery movement emerged in the U.S., and you would miss the connection between ideas about racism and white superiority and the surprising ways that this affected peoples’ views on women voting. As you complete this stage of your research, your question will start to evolve a little bit (sometimes a lot, and that is okay!). The more you know about the topic, the more nuanced and complex your question will become. For example, if we are still working with the sample question above, once you’ve understood that this time period coincides with the beginning of the anti-slavery movement, your new question can be more sophisticated; now you might ask, “Did the racism of white women who were fighting to gain the right to vote help or hinder their movement?” Or you might ask, “Why did many white women not see their own subjection as similar to that of black people, and see potential allies in black activists?”   Checkup Assignment for Stage 2: Please double space your response to the following questions (your response will be 3 pages in total, double spaced). Page 1 answers this question Find and read one scholarly source that covers the time period of your question. Write a one-page summary of this source; your summary needs to explain the thesis and central evidence that the author uses. Please start your summary by properly citing your source, including author, title, and publication info.  Page 2 Answers this question Find and read one scholarly source that covers the theme/category of your question. Write a one-page summary of this source; your summary needs to explain the thesis and central evidence that the author uses. Please start your summary by properly citing your source, including author, title, and publication info.  Page 3 answers this question Write a one-page analysis that explains what information from these sources you will use to further your research project—what are the new topics you want to explore, and what is the new question that emerges. Please be very careful to fill this one page with really meaningful content; think carefully about each of the tools in our class “toolkit” which means identifying changes, causes and effects, how is relates to my life. and explicitly explain how you are using these tools to help you make connections and ask a better question for the next stage of your research.
