chapter 1 DB 1
Learning about history is far more than just reading about it in a textbook written by a bunch of men, or sometimes women. As you read through the required textbook, keep in mind that the historian(s) who wrote it used evidence to write the book. These historians put together their books much like a detective does while investigating a crime and then forming a conclusion about that crime. Historians use evidence from the past to form their thoughts, opinions, and conclusions. This evidence is referred to as Primary Sources. Yale explains that: Primary sources provide first-hand testimony or direct evidence concerning a topic under investigation. They are created by witnesses or recorders who experienced the events or conditions being documented. Often these sources are created at the time when the events or conditions are occurring, but primary sources can also include autobiographies, memoirs, and oral histories recorded later. Primary sources are characterized by their content, regardless of whether they are available in original format, in microfilm/microfiche, in digital format, or in published format.(http://www.yale.edu/collections_collaborative/primarysources/primarysources.html) Throughout this course, you will be required to read and review several different primary sources and provide feedback, therefore, its best to get acquainted with this evidence early on! -We’re going to start off with a Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies by Barholome de la Casas: a short account of the destrcution of the indies by bartolome de la casas.pdf It’s a primary source even though it’s been translated into English and even though it’s technically “English,” some of the language is still much more archaic and/or cumbersome than we’re accustomed to. Despite that, I want to read through it and tell me what stands out to you and why it does. What does he claim as the Spanish motivations for colonization? What does he say the native people were like? What resonates with you about this text? Use examples and/or quotes from this source! Also – remember – I’ve seen the answers on the internet so I’m looking for YOUR response – not some auto generated answer that someone requested on pages like Yahoo Answers! 😉 The reason I’ve chosen this is because there is plenty of help out there for interpreting, but, I expect honest and thoughtful responses. https://openstax.org/details/books/us-history
Pieces of Music
Choose one of the composers on the list below and write a 2000-word essay about how they interacted with their place of work. You must use a variety of primary and secondary sources and your essay should be correctly referenced according to Chicago style. You should discuss specific pieces of music, analyzing how they illustrate the time and place in which they were composed. Monteverdi in Mantua OR in Venice; Strozzi in Venice; Schütz in Dresden; Lully at Versailles; Handel in London; Gluck in Vienna; Mozart in Vienna OR in Prague; Haydn at Eszterháza OR in London; Beethoven in Vienna; Schubert in Vienna; Berlioz in Paris; Wagner at Bayreuth; Debussy in Paris; Ravel in Paris
Snapshot 1
Snapshot 1- utilize all the assigned Rubenstein readings from weeks 1 and 2 (chapters 1 and 2) and will chronologically/historically cover: pre-history to the late 1700s AD -summarize the weeks materials presented within the Rubenstein book in the form of 4 separate essay questions -professor wants to see that you covered all the bases of the pertinent era but also that you identified all the significant themes of the era covered using SOLELY the Rubenstein book -Youre essentially going to summarize the readings in 4 coherent, synthesized essays, from the weeks assigned providing a survey of the ups, downs and etc within those readings. You want to look for overall big-picture themes and significant happenstances. In providing me with this summary I am going to have you break it down over 4 separate areas of thought. For each individual question on all the snapshots I am looking for at least a strong paragraph of information. -DO summarize what is happening by cooking up an broad summative essay DONT relate what happened event by event or regurgitate what was read narrating the history as all that IS NOT what I am looking for here. Avoid just listing the facts from the chapters -Second – after processing what you’ve read – it’s now time to “cook up” the bigger picture essay/summation of what you read across the 4 areas I ask in these things. You are to provide 4 essays in each snap that each speaking to a different topic. -Your four essays in each snapshot will summarize what happened during the era we studied in terms of (4 paragraphs for each topic) 1) settlement/demography 2) Culture 3) Economics 4) The legacy As a side note – the chapters are chunked/divvied as they are because there is in fact a theme in the batches of chapters. When you provide the snapshot entry for either settlement, culture, econ, or legacy it is your job in each to provide a broad, summative yet detailed and coherent overview of what you’ve just read. Not a regurgitation of the chapters or a listing of facts and events snap 1, settlement – this is your place to tell me about Native demography, stats, locations, patterns, associations – then you would explore the arrival of the Euros – who, where to, when? Perhaps too mention how they interacted or displaced the Natives from where they were living. Ill message the book login of my VitalSource of the book required for this paper.
Co-temporary world History
World War I is different from most other wars in that it was not a direct result of aggression by one entity towards another, notwithstanding the assassination of Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand by Serbian elements. Instead, it was the consequence of a number of forces amidst a disruption of the tenuous balance of power in Europe. Identify two forces that lead to WWI. Examine how they contributed to the outbreak of war. Minimum of 2 sources cited (assigned readings and an outside source) APA format for in-text citations and list of references Book resource for the assignment: Duiker, W. J. (2015). Contemporary world history (6th ed.). Stamford, CT: Cengage Learning
Discussion Reply
I need two discussion replies each for an English and History class. Please see below: DISCUSSION REPLIES, HISTORY (2) HERE IS MY POST: Hi Classmates, My name is Eddie, and I live in San Diego, California. I was born and raised in Long Island, New York. I decided to return to school so I could finish what I started thirty-nine years ago. I plan to earn my Business Degree in about three years. This time around, I want to set an example for my grandchildren on how important it is to get a college degree. Since graduating from High School, I have served in the US Army, US Marine Corps, I have worked in pipeline, demolition, built aircraft, worked as an automotive technician for Ford and finally started two businesses in the past ten years. I am a father of three boys and a grandfather to six girls and two boys. I enjoy reading about American history and American Presidents. My goal for this course is to learn more about the aftermath of the Civil War. I am an avid antique collector and enjoy restoring old cars, trucks, and fire-engines. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx KIMS POST Hi everyone! My name is Kim and I live outside Philadelphia. I am a history major at Abington. I am technically a 3rd year student since I am an adult learner and had transfer credits, but I am only in my 2nd year here. I am very interested in local and family history. I especially like helping people research their own family immigration stories and helping them solve their family history mysteries by using DNA. I am minoring in biology with a focus on genetics. I have two kids (age 11 and 9), so right now their interests are my interests 🙂 I like helping my son learn to fish and my daughter loves doing arts and crafts projects. One interesting thing I suppose is that we have chickens which the kids are learning to care for. My husband built a mobile coop and we grew a pretty large garden this year trying to take advantage of the extra time at home. I am taking this course for my major and to deepen my understanding of American history. My goal is to learn more about the perspectives of different people during this time period. I hope to gain a better understanding of what this time was like for different individuals and families. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx KIMS REPLY TO MY POST Hi Eddie. Thank you for your service and I loved reading your story! My Dad also enjoyed restoring old cars. All my childhood travel was to different car shows 🙂 Restoring fire-engines must be challenging. Best of luck with your degree! I transferred into Penn State from a community college here in Washington State. So technically I’m a junior. I’m majoring in history with the intent to transfer into law school after I’ve finished my degree. I work as an assistant manager at our local movie theater here, so I can firmly say that one of my biggest interests is in film. Especially the history of film. If i had to pick something interesting about myself it would be that I plan to move abroad once I’m finished with my schooling so I can experience life and history from other cultures as well as our own. I’m taking this class because I’ve always had a deep fascination with the Antebellum era. Everything from the society, to the economy, to the war itself is fun to learn about. So I hope to deepen my knowledge of the time period in this course. Have a great semester everyone! I am an avid antique collector and enjoy restoring old cars, trucks, and fire-engines. In 2019, I solved a problem that I will forever remember using my persuasion skills. My friend’s son Peter who is from Texas had a disagreement with his parents about schooling, and I had to intervene. The problem was that Peter had disrespected his parents by misusing money that he was given to pay for school. Peter had spent three weeks away from home just after he was given the money. He later confessed that he had spent the money on partying with friends and used all the money without paying school fees as intended. Consequently, his parents were distraught and had decided to terminate his schooling by not offering any further support even though Peter had confessed and pledged never to repeat that mistake. Peter had asked me to intervene and talk to his parents on his behalf, a duty that I successfully did. I appealed to the parents to forgive him and give him another chance since mistakes were common in young adults at his age. Furthermore, I convinced them that Peter needed guidance instead of disowning him. Peter’s father, who appeared to be adamant about changing his decision, was the first to accept my plea and support Peter’s wishes to go back to school. As per now, Peter is among the high performing students in college and proves to have a very bright future academically. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX ANDREW POST HELLO ALL. MY NAME IS ANDREW, AND I CURRENTLY RESIDE IN HOPKINSVILLE, KY, WITH MY WIFE AND OUR TWO DOGS. MY CURRENT HOBBIES INCLUDE SPENDING TIME WITH MY FAMILY, WATCHING DIFFERENT SPORTING EVENTS, AND WORKING ON MY PICKUP TRUCK. I USE RHETORIC EVERY DAY TO SOLVE PROBLEMS AS I AM THE HEAD OF MY DEPARTMENT. A RECENT EXAMPLE OF USING RHETORIC TO SOLVE A PROBLEM WOULD BE WHEN A CONFLICT AROSE BETWEEN TWO OF MY EMPLOYEES. THERE HAD BEEN A RIFT BETWEEN THE TWO SUPERVISORY PERSONNEL FOR SOME TIME, AND IT WAS STARTING TO SHOW TO OTHER EMPLOYEES IN THE DEPARTMENT. I HAD TO GATHER THE TWO TOGETHER AND UTILIZE RHETORIC REVOLVING AROUND TEAMWORK TO SQUASH THE RIFT AND GET EVERYONE ON THE SAME PAGE. THIS WAS CLEARLY A CASE OF DIFFERENT LEADERSHIP STYLES, AND THE TWO SUPERVISORS WERE TOO STUBBORN TO REALIZE THAT. THE SPECIFIC PROBLEM REVOLVED AROUND THE TIMES THAT EACH OF THEM REPORTED WORKING, ONE SUPERVISOR REPORTED EARLIER THAN THE OTHER TO EXECUTE THE SAME TASK. MY RHETORIC TO THE SUPERVISORS WAS SPECIFICALLY TO THEM TO GET THEM WORKING AS A COHESIVE UNIT AS THE RIFT WAS STARTING TO BE VISIBLE TO THEIR EMPLOYEES. The Progressive Presidents
This week we are discussing the history of the Progressive Era, an age when political and economic freedoms expanded for many. The tragic 1911 fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Company demonstrated the prevailing feeling in America that the government had to be more responsible for the well-being of its people. Progressives assumed that the modern era required a fundamental rethinking of the functions of political authority. Enlarging democracy, governing by experts, and spearheading reform were all characteristic of the era. In a well thought out and thorough discussion answer please compare and contrast the ideas and policies of the three “Progressive presidents”–Theodore Roosevelt, William Taft, and Woodrow Wilson. To what extent were their ideas and policies truly Progressive? To what extent did they succeed or fail in implementing Progressive policies?
American Revolution
In at least two well-developed paragraphs discuss: Was the American Revolution, revolutionary? Meaning, many historians argue that yes, a new government was created and amazingly survived. That is astounding and they were really creating something wholly different than other governments from around the world. However, for many people their lives the day after the war did not look any different from their lives before the war. They had the same jobs, the same economic status, political benefits or exclusions. Positions of power did not change for many white men and women and certainly not for American Indians and slaves. With these two different ideas in mind about the Revolution answer the question: was the American Revolution revolutionary or not and be sure to support your answers with primary and secondary sources. You must only use the Galileo(Georgia Military College) or the course textbook. You must cite all direct quotes and paraphrased material with proper APA in-text citations in the paragraphs. At the bottom of your submission (right below the paragraphs), you must include an APA-style bibliography of all the sources you used.
