Discussion 1.2: Your Perspective Let’s figure out how images and sound in the media have changed the cultural landscape of values in society over the years. In this post, evaluate converging media as highlighted in Chapter 5. Below are some questions to consider: Sound The 1950s brought rock and roll into the American music scene. As a generalization, how do you think the “older” generations–at that time–may have reacted differently than the younger generations? Think about how record albums seemed like such a marvel when they were invented! Do you think that when CDs were created that music listeners were equally as awed? Explain. And what about the advent of the iPod? How is the evolution of music formats affecting listeners? How is it affecting you? Radio How did radio shift the American culture during its beginning years and prior to the advent of TV? If you owned your own radio station, how would you design your programs? What would your content style be? Who would your audience be? How would you cater to their interests? ZOOM Describe and Organization Paper- The first “reaction” paper requires you to write a description of an organization of which you have been a member. Describe a potential work-related problem caused by mistaken or misguided use of social media. Conclude with a recommendation to ensure a similar problem doesn’t reoccur. Describe a workplace situation in which fallacious reasoning caused both unnecessary conflict and expense. Conclude with a recommendation to ensure a similar problem doesn’t reoccur. Market yourself to a potential employer by convincing them you are an ideal candidate for a position. Demonstrate your understanding of the related duties and responsibilities, explain your suitability, and describe the benefits of employing you. Although it doesn’t necessarily have to be a position that’s currently posted, the job should be one you aspire to hold after graduation (or as a step up from your current post). Post your presentation to ‘Media Gallery’; include a short title in the ‘Name’ box as well as a self-evaluation of its effectiveness (four to five sentences) in the ‘Description’ box. Further Guidelines: Online audio-visual interaction is becoming increasingly common such as when job candidates are interviewed via Skype, FaceTime, or other real-time interactive platforms to save time and travel costs. Increasingly, many individuals post a short video report on their personal web site or social media page in order to market themselves to potential employers. Indeed, the ability to connect through video reporting is a skill that can differentiate you from others and significantly work to your professional advantage. This is as an opportunity to demonstrate you can write and organize information in a way that can be effectively communicated in a basic video report format. Frame your visual as a head and shoulders or upper body shot. Be yourself in order to appear natural, but also aim to convey a professional ethos. The essence of any effective business message is to come across in a serious-minded and persuasive way, so make your points clearly and convincingly. The only visual aid required in your presentation is yourself. It’s not just what you have to say but how you say it, so convey interest in your topic. Someone who looks or sounds bored can’t expect their audience to find them engaging. Someone who sounds rushed or disorganized will also be less effective. Someone who is difficult to understand is obviously unlikely to be persuasive. While an online oral report might seem like an easy task to some students, it can be a challenge to ensure your content and delivery come across the way you want, i.e. clear, meaningful, and persuasive. It’s not uncommon to have quite a few ‘takes’ before you’re satisfied. If you get 99% through it error-free only to misspeak a word or two in the last sentence, you’re certainly not alone. You may, if necessary, speak for up to eight minutes at the very most in order to present the content to your satisfaction. See the guidelines for recording and uploading your report. To make sure the video presentation software works properly with your computer, post a test video you can then check for acceptable visual and sound quality. You can delete any test videos you upload. If you have any problems with your own computer, use one of the UFV computers available to students. Value 10%

Feature Story Query/ Pitch Letter- I AM COM MAJOR Prior to beginning work on this assignment, your Final Project requires that you consider the importance of visual images in planning feature stories or profiles. As you think about your ideas for the Final The project, consider the types of original visual images you will be able to obtain for the feature. Read Chapters 1 and 2 of White Space Is Not Your Enemy to assist in the planning of your feature story. Review the Week Five instructions for the Final Project for more information about what you will be required to include in the feature story or profile. Then, follow the directions depending on your area of study for this week’s assignment. COM Majors: This week, you will write three proposal letters for real-world publications with your ideas for the feature profile that will be used in the Final Project in Week Five. This assignment requires that you propose your ideas for a communication campaign for a business or organization in your local area with the purpose of helping it to effectively communicate its message to its audience. Each proposal will be written for consideration for a local print magazine, a local digital publication, and a broadcast media outlet. While you will not be required to actually submit the proposals to the local media outlets, you must clearly identify them and understand the audiences they serve. You must be able to conduct research associated with the business or organization to be included in the communications you create. While parts of the proposal letters will be the same, other parts must be written specifically towards the media outlet. Only one list of sources is required.   JRN Majors: This week, you will write three query letters for real-world publications with your ideas for the feature story that will be used in the Final Project in Week Five. This assignment requires that you write about a regionally or nationally significant topic and its impact on your local community, city, town, or state. The query letters will be written for consideration for your local print newspaper, a digital publication, and a broadcast media outlet. While you will not be required to actually submit the letters to the local media outlets, you must clearly identify the media outlets and understand the audiences they serve. You must plan to interview at least two local people who can lend expert knowledge and opinions relevant to the topic that you choose to write about. While parts of the query letters will be the same, other parts must be written specifically towards the media outlet. Only one list of sources is required. Important: Please carefully read the instructions belowand follow them according to your area of study. If you are a COM student, your instructions fall at the front of the “or,” and if you are a JRN student, you should follow the instructions after the“or” in each criteria. If there is no “or” included in a criteria, it applies to all students regardless of area of study. Each one-page query or proposal letter Must include the contact information, including a proper greeting for the query letter. Must create a strong lead that is informative and compelling. Must describe unique selling points. Must include previous work to demonstrate expertise and credibility or your interest in the topic. Must create a concluding paragraph that summarizes the topic. Must provide a preliminary list of four sources of information including the following: The source of factual information related to the history of the business or organization you are profiling or interview of an expert source on the topic or issue (conducted in person, videoconference, or by phone) The source of factual information about the current strategies that the business or organization is involved in or interview of an additional source with an opposing point of view on the topic or issue (conducted in person, videoconference, or by phone) Two credible sources from which you plan to gather facts and/or statistics about the topic (open records, meetings, speeches, news releases, etc.)

Assignment Details Social Reform in the Gilded and Progressive Eras Jacob Riis was a journalist and social reformer whose photographs of the poor in New York City in the late 19th century are legendary for their candor and grit. Do a search for the photographs of Jacob Riis (himself an immigrant). Many of Jacob Riis’ works can be found here. Riis and other reformers brought the plight of the poor, the immigrant, and the rural farmer to the forefront of politics at the turn of the 20th century. The cause of such conditions can be directly attributed to the growth of corporations and unregulated business practices during the late Industrial Revolution in the United States (1850–1900).
