Debt Level

we combine components we have explored during the last several weeks: Stocks, Bonds and Risk.  The focus of this week is how a firm structures its financing (debt, equity, retained earnings). A firm has to trade-off return, risk, and the timing of inflows and outflows.  Let’s see how much you have learned….   Individual Discussion Instructions  Check out the list of statements below. Each individual can choose one statement to discuss- each may be chosen by only two students within each group Please provide an explanation of the reasoning of the statement- 1-2 sentences Now, using what you know about return, risk, and timing, unpack the statement.  Provide a discussion – why are they incorrect or incomplete?   (hints are provided below each statement) – 1-2 sentence. Example:  Statement: “Derivatives are financial weapons of mass destruction” a view of Warren Buffet This is an opinion that is motivated by large financial losses that derivatives can cause for investors and firms. For example, Amaranth Advisors used natural gas derivative contracts to speculate on nat-gas leading to large losses for their investors and disruption of the nat-gas market. However, derivative contracts can also be used for cash flow smoothing and price stability (example: Cotton futures). This allows hedgers to increase cash flow stability.  Both speculators and hedgers participate in both sides of the contracts to provide a liquid well-functioning market. Berkshire Hathaway utilizes Derivative Contracts in its investment strategies. In conclusion, they can be dangerous when used incorrectly or with malicious intent, and can also be helpful for the agricultural, energy, and financial economic participants List of Statements- paste into group wiki page and each student chooses one to discuss It is better to use a shorter mortgage term than a longer mortgage term to save on interest Hint: What are the benefits of a longer mortgage? It is best to pay for a house in cash because borrowing is expensive Hint: What else can a firm do with cash Firms should not hold so much debt Hint: why might a firm use debt rather than other types of financing The firm went bankrupt due to a decrease in revenue Hint:  what other factors have to be true for this to be the case?  Think about variables on the Income Statement The covid-19 pandemic caused the firm to go bankrupt Hint: the pandemic is just the situation, what other factors have to be true for this to be the case The firm was carrying too much debt, which led to bankruptcy Hint: Does a bankruptcy occur because of the debt level?  Connect the dots here The firm has a large number of assets and is large, making it a very profitable successful firm Hint: how are assets and income related?

Business Communication

OMM 220: BUSINESS COMMUNICATIONS – Major Written Assignment #1 Feasibility Report Background1: A feasibility report is an objective analysis of a business problem or opportunity. It generally follows a robust consideration of many options or solutions to the problem. The feasibility report sets out the preferred option and proves its viability. Its purpose is to define the parameters of the project, as well as the resources needed to see it through to fruition. It estimates the risk involved and the likelihood of success for the project. A feasibility report might ask any of the following questions: • Is this site right for the project? • Should we open a new location? If so, where? • Should we launch a new product or service? Will it work? • Will our fundraiser be successful? Assignment: You have an idea for a student program/offering, either at Sauder, your undergraduate faculty or the broader campus, based on a need or opening you’ve observed. It could be a project, an event, an exhibit, a fundraiser – it might be to highlight research, for recruitment or to promote athletics or the arts. (It should not be to implement a new course, nor should it be a business proposal, as these are outside the scope of the assignment.) You approach the correct administrator with the idea. She thinks for a moment and instead of saying no, asks you for a feasibility report. Write a 1,200 – 1,500 word report (not including citations) that includes a description of the proposed idea, an assessment of the demand, the value to the school and any socio-political concerns you think Sauder, your undergraduate faculty or the university would need to consider. Support your writing with research. A minimum of four sources is expected. The report must include a title page (with the word count of the report), and at least one visual component, such as a table, chart, infographic or graphs. These are not included in the word count. Use APA referencing and a 12-point, business appropriate font, single-spaced. 1 Feasibility Report Template, Government of Canada, http://www.tpsgc-pwgsc.gc.ca/biensproperty/ sngp-npms/ti-it/etivcarftp-idsfvfrmd-eng.html COMM 220: BUSINESS COMMUNICATIONS – Major Written Assignment #1 Report Structure: Remember what you’ve learned about logical organization and layout. Don’t forget the importance of visual appeal, descriptive headers and scanability. The topics below should guide your analysis and should be addressed in your report in some fashion. However, they don’t need to be presented in this order, nor do they need to be separate sections. Think about what your particular audience needs to know to make an informed decision. There is no one format for this report. • Introduction/Purpose and Project Description • Background Information • Goals or Problem o Describe the need or issue you’ve observed. How does the project address it? o Can you quantify this need in the community or provide support for its necessity? • Performance Measures o How will you determine the effectiveness of the project? • Assumptions & Constraints o What will you need to assume to complete the task and what will limit the success of the project, e.g. cost, space, mandate? • Risk Analysis o Identify the major risks inherent in the project and suggest possible mitigation strategies. • Alternatives o What other solutions are there to this problem or goal? Is anything else already addressing it or what else could? • Recommendation & Conclusion o Provide a justification for your idea. o Identify the resources necessary to complete the project. o Summarize the key points of your report and your rationale, without explaining everything all over again. Deadlines and Submission Guidelines: • Draft due on the Thursday during synchronous class time before the final deadline – you will be penalized 10% on your report for failing to attend this class or bringing a working draft • Final report due via Turn-it-in either PDF or Word.

Case Write Up

Step 1: Read the Movie Industry Case that I uploaded. Step 2: Fill out the Industry Analysis Worksheet. You should use the completed worksheet to inform/guide the paper which is in the next step (Case write-up). The questions are specifically designed to get you to think about strategic decisions made by firms. The industry we are analyzing is the movie THEATER industry. The case begins with a discussion on the movie production/distribution industry. For our purposes, the movie production industry is the same as the movie distribution industry and is one of the main suppliers to the movie theater industry. Step 3: Write a case write-up with 6 pages, double space, MLA format, and 1-inch margin. And answer the following questions address in the paper.  1. There are two key suppliers to the movie theater industry- the companies that supply the actual movie to the theaters (movie production companies) and those that supply the movie theaters with snacks and drinks for the concession counters. What is the level of power each of these suppliers (High, Medium, Low)? Why? If you were a movie theater executive where would you focus your strategic decisions (movie tickets or concessions)? Why? 2. The case mentions that the cost of distributing movies to the theaters fell from $1500 to $200 when most theaters upgraded to digital projection systems. How does this cost change impact the price that movie theaters pay to get movie prints? In other words, what would you expect the price that movie theaters pay to get movie prints? Why? 3. What is the threat level of substitutes (High, Medium, Low)? Why? What kinds of movies are likely to be shown at movie theaters in response to this threat (Romance, Comedy, Action, Horror, Kids Movies, etc.)? Why?  4. What is the level of price competition in the movie theater industry? Why? Why are Regal’s and AMC’s average ticket prices about the same? What dimensions are they competing on? Why? There is no need to describe each force as the intro to the paper. You go right into answering the first question. The questions ask you to describe the most important forces/threats. It is ok to have an intro if that helps you introduce the paper and get you going. If you do decide to use an intro please keep it short (3-5 sentences max). The last paragraph or two of the paper should be a conclusion paragraph. Sum up what you analyzed and discuss what your findings mean for the profitability of the industry Please answer each question in a different section of the paper. It will force you to analyze each important force/threat separately and help you understand that each force is independent of the other forces/threats.

Target Audience

Review your purpose, audience, and genre. Is your purpose clear to your target audience? Should you modify your chosen purpose to appeal to your audience? Criteria are standards of value. They contain categories and judgments, as in good fuel economy, good reliability, or powerful use of light and shade in a painting. Some categories, such as price, have clearly implied judgments (low price), but make sure that your criteria refer implicitly or explicitly to a standard of value. Examine your criteria from your audience s point of view. Which criteria are most important in evaluating your subject? Will your readers agree that the criteria you select are indeed the most important ones? Will changing the order in which you present your criteria make your evaluation more convincing? Organize your essay around your criteria. Generally, this means one criterion per paragraph. Include both positive and negative evaluations of your subject. If all of your judgments are positive, your evaluation will sound like an advertisement. If all of your judgments are negative, your readers may think you are too critical. Be sure to include supporting evidence for each criterion. Without any data or support, your evaluation will be just an opinion that will not persuade your reader. Avoid overgeneralizing in your claims. If you are evaluating only three software programs, you cannot say that Lotus 1-2-3 is the best business program around. You can say only that it is the best among the group or the best in the particular class that you measured. Unless your goal is humor or irony, compare subjects that belong in the same class. Comparing a Ford Focus to a BMW is absurd because they are not similar cars in terms of cost, design, or purpose. Is your use of MLA format correct? Double check. If you are citing other people s data or quoting sources, check to make sure your summaries and data are accurate. Signal the major divisions in your evaluation to your reader using clear transitions, key words, and paragraph hooks. At the beginning of new paragraphs or sections in your essay, let your reader know where you are going. Revise sentences for directness and clarity. Read your work out loud to find minor mistakes. Edit your evaluation for correct spelling, appropriate word choice,

Conflict Management Style

Must be at least 8 sentences long. 5 basic conflict management styles: Accommodating, Avoiding, Negotiating, Forcing, and Collaborating.  The text makes it seem obvious that the collaborating conflict style is “best”, but it is not always possible to find a win-win solution to every conflict (here is a hint though:  win-win is often possible when two or more parties work together over an extended amount of time, but may not be possible in every isolated instant or decision).  For this discussion, think of a time when you have encountered a conflict.  What conflict management styles were used in the interactions?  What approach did you take? Did the conflict get resolved to your satisfaction?  What could have gone differently that may have changed the outcome (either on your end, or on their end)?
