Objective: Outline Jonathan Edwards’ evaluation of the phenomenon observed during the Great Awakening. As the Great Awakening spread, many people were questioning the legitimacy of the movement due to some of the phenomena that people were experiencing during the revival meetings. People were experiencing very emotional reactions to the preaching with loud weeping,groaning, shouts, and other expressions that traditional American church leaders felt were unseemly. Many traditional church leaders began to criticize the Great Awakening as being all emotion and of no real spiritual benefit. During the controversy, Jonathan Edwards wrote his treatise on religious affections exploring the phenomenon that people were experiencing and examining whether the people experiencing these phenomena could be experiencing genuine Christian spiritual transformation. -Read pages 2-20 of “A Treatise Concerning Religious Affections. -As you read, pay attention to the case Edwards makes for the necessity of affections in true Christian discipleship. Also take note of how affections are similar to and different from the way we use the word emotion in our age. -Write a two-page double spaced response on Edward,s treatise on affections. Please include the following elements:  -Summarize Edwards,s argument in favor of the necessity of affections in true Christian experience.  -Choose one argument that seems particularly interesting or meaningful for you and explain why this is so.  -Finally, include at least one paragraph of reflection on how the truth of Edwards’s treatise can be applied to your personal life or ministry.

Assignment 1.1: Milton’s Paradise Lost Before the Renaissance, religion (notably Christianity) played a major role in the Western literary tradition. After the Renaissance-era, writers such as John Milton explored psychological aspects of the characters in their works, even as they still used Biblical characters, such as God, Satan, Adam, and Eve. Assignment 1.1: Write a one (1) page paper (not 1.5) with clearly defined terms, topic, and developed thesis sentence that briefly discusses the character of Satan and how he is represented in Book I. Does he come across as a villain or a hero? As a protagonist or antagonist? DRAW SPECIFICALLY FROM THE TEXTS. DO NOT PLAGIARIZE. DO NOT REFERENCE OUTSIDE SOURCES (Google, Wikipedia, student guides, encyclopedias, dictionaries, etc.) FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT. USE STANDARD MLA HEADING (see MLA Style Sheet under “Class Information”), CREATE YOUR OWN TITLE FOR YOUR ASSIGNMENT, AND DOUBLE-SPACE ALL WRITING.

This should be done by answering the following questions: does the religion have specific requirements for conversion? Does it emphasize advocacy? If so, how is advocacy usually done? How does interaction (with encapsulation) occur? Does the faith have specific commitment rituals? How are new converts expected to behave?

HUMANITIES 1302 MINI-RESEARCH PAPER     For this assignment you are to research a place of worship for any religion in any of the styles that we discuss in this class OR for any religion that was in existence or begun before the year 1400.  You must turn in a 800 word (minimum) paper with MLA formatting and all sources properly cited.  The building must have been built by 1400 or at least be begun by 1400.   Your first paragraph should explain why you chose this particular structure.    Your second paragraph should describe the exterior in detail, especially any decoration.   Your third paragraph should describe the floor plan—the general shape of it, aisles, altar, etc.   Your fourth paragraph should describe the interior in detail, especially any decoration.   Your fifth paragraph should be the conclusion.  In this paragraph explain anything that you would change in the building to make it more appropriate or innovative (but remember, no electricity!) for the time period.   You should use a minimum of four sources with at least three being internet sources or databases.  I suggest that you use some of the databases available on the Brookhaven College library web site.  Wikipedia is not an acceptable source.  In order to help you with this project, I have put two books on reserve in the library.  They are:  Architecture: From Prehistoric to Post-Modernism by Trachtenberg and Hyman and Meaning in Western Architecture by Norberg-Schultz.

The majority of your grade will be dependent on how well you use the critical writing pattern of ‘they say + citation / I say plus an example of what you are trying to say.’ See Grading Rubric in the Syllabus for more details.Give an example of the following Concepts of Servant Leadership from either a book you have read, a movie you have seen or from personal experience. Give 2 examples from the book, movie or your personal experience to support your position How would you describe the EGO of this character in terms of the two ways EGO is discussed in this class? (Edging God Out Verses Exalting God Only) Give at least 2 examples from the book, movie or your personal experience to support your position.  Use APA Citations for all your sources and include an APA References list.  (No Title Page or other APA formatting is required) Spelling and Grammar are important.

Do you notice any differences and/or similarities in the way the two cases of violence were presented by Chinoy and Haque?  2. Describe these and discuss why there might be differences or similarities in their approaches to two events.

I need to write a research paper on Women’s gender role in Second temple judaism.  Evaluation:  how well you are able to achieve the objectives and follow the method that you set in the introduction of your own paper.  Another important aspect of the evaluation of your paper is how well it reflects that you became more familiar with the sources and issues of Second Temple Judaism.

Search online for a news report about an artifact from the humanities involved in a religious controversy, and answer the following questions. Consider searching the religion section of CNN or similar sources. Provide a link to the news story and write a short (1-2 paragraph) summary of each side’s position. How do you think the controversy was impacted by each party’s interpretation of this artifact?
