Non-State Organization
Identify a non-state actor/organization of interest to you. It should fit within one of the course units (e.g. religious group, city, IO, NGO, terrorist org) The thesis of the paper should be how that actor impacts international politics. What forms of power does it exercise? What makes it relevant? How does it interact with other structures of global governance? Make an argument using course material! Review the history/origins of the actor, its structure and current relevance. How might this actor evolve in the future? What additional pressing questions should future research examine?

Duffers Drift
Assimilate the lessons learned from the dream sequences in Defense of Duffer’s Drift. The Lieutenant’s dream sequences help him understand his tactical problem and make decisions when faced with a new problem. The Lieutenant had virtually no knowledge of the terrain, the weather, civilians, enemy, etc. If an intelligence section had been made available to the Lieutenant, how might have he used such staff to help him avoid the painful (and deadly) consequences of poor decision making in his dream sequences? Federal Geospatial Information
In 2004 the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency asked the RAND Corporation to conduct a study of the potential threat that open federal geospatial information may pose. They were particularly concerned that terrorist groups would use the data to plan and execute attacks on the US. They found that although a few of the federal publicly accessible data sets could be beneficial to terrorists, most geospatial information is unlikely to meet the needs of terrorists, and in any event similar geospatial information is available from other public sources (like Google Maps and Google Earth). Read Laura Blumenfelds article Dissertation Could Be Security Threat. In the Forum, describe your position on the argument between the need to make data available for public use, and the need to restrict data to protect the nation. Take a side and defend it. Democracy
Democracy is in trouble in the United States. Trumps election has pushed some to rethink the desirability of democracy, and to fashion ways for the intellectual elite to exert more influence over democratic decision-making. Others, particularly the roughly half of eligible voters who do not vote, feel that the US political system does not offer them anything worth their participation in politics. How can the political-economic system of the United States be reformed to better achieve the promise of democracy, the system of government that gives all citizens equal power in governing themselves?
