Romantic literature dominated American arts and letters up until the end of the 19th century. In “Fenimore Cooper’s Literary Offences” Twain discusses how Cooper’s writing fails because Cooper’s writing focuses more on imagination than on any sort of logic or realistic depictions. How does Twain avoid these “literary offences” in “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” and why is this avoidance significant?

Discussion Question:  Read Edward Hirsch’s article on How to Read a Poem  (Links to an external site.) , so you can understand how to approach what we read in this unit. After that, choose a poem from this week’s unit. Then, answer the questions Hirsch says you should use “when approaching a poem for the first time” (see questions below). In this poetry, Walt Whitman clearly wished to create the sense of an all-encompassing, all-welcoming democracy. You may have noted that our unit on Realism begins at the end of the Civil War, and the unit ends at the beginning of World War I. As readers, we must consider that Whitman’s experiences in our nation prompted him to analyze his place, and others’, in the world. His conclusion was “For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you” (line 3). Whitman relies heavily on references to nature to make his readers feel relaxed and part of a shared world. For example, in section 6, the poet describes grass as being made from “hopeful green stuff woven.” He also refers to it as a “uniform hieroglyphic,” as if its existence is timeless but the same generation after generation. I think Whitman refers to grass often because it is one of nature’s components that connects everyone, no matter time or place. Mastery of Persuasion:  Draft 1  Goal:  This writing assignment asks you to demonstrate all the skills thus far in the semester:  comparing and contrasting, evaluating an author’s argument, using relevant evidence to support your argument,  incorporating the three appeals, establishing an appropriate and effective tone toward your audience, acknowledging all sides of an argument, and using cause-effect strategies. Prompt: Focus on the problem/issue in your Argumentative Non-Fiction book as well as the author’s argument about the problem/issue.  This portion of the essay should be 150-200 words in length. What details does the author include to showcase the problem itself as well as support his/her argument about the main cause, the proposed solution, and/or the effects.  This portion of the essay should be 400-500 words in length Then, using your personal opinions and experiences, discuss whether you agree or disagree with the author’s stance on the topic.  Here, you will use philosophical arguments, hypothetical evidence, and personal evidence from your own life to convince your audience on the correctness or incorrectness of the author’s opinion and/or to side with your beliefs.   Do not use any research, statistics, or outside sources: instead, approach the argument using the rhetorical modes (logos, ethos, pathos).   Develop clashing commonplaces and what you see as the fundamental arguments to both sides of the issue that you are looking to reckon and to resolve.  This portion of the essay should be 750-1000 words in length.  Requirements: I recommend conferencing with your teacher before beginning to write, so you can receive feedback on your approach.
