Literature Review

You should undertake a comprehensive review of the literature on your topic.  You should review at least six scholarly sources and six additional sources that may be scholarly or not.  In some cases, such as Operation JAWBREAKER, you will need to review the books written by the team leaders, such as “First In” by Gary Schroen and “Jawbreaker” by Gary Bernsten.  You may count each of these books as a scholarly source.  When reviewing books, be sure to explain how the authors’ approaches differ from one another.  Organize your review thematically rather than by author and use it to structure the arguments which you make in your paper.  I have attached the literature review formatting guide which we use in the thesis course.   Your assignment should include assignment two as one complete paper and be approximately 8-10 pages (but no more than 12 pages) total, Times New Roman, 12 pt. font, double-spaced.   If you do not include the introduction, purpose statement, research question, and evaluation methods from your previous assignment, points will be deducted.  Do NOT turn in just a literature review.

Pride and Prejudice

Choose a short passage from Pride and Prejudice. Use a close reading of your chosen passage to make an argument about the novel as a whole. The essay should be argument-driven; there should be a clear main claim and clear subclaims that structure the essay’s analysis of the passage.   In order to do this essay properly you will have to provide careful close readings of your passages. This involves summarizing, analyzing, and interpreting every part of the passage. (In other words, tell your reader what happens, discuss the word choice/imagery/rhetorical devices used in the passage, and connect the passage to the rest of the text.)   It may be helpful to reference other parts of the text; however, this is not a compare-and-contrast essay, so you should only deploy such comparisons when they further your argument about the primary section of text. Similarly, you may wish to reference the argument of one of the videos you’ve watched for class. Again, you may do this as it is useful (and certainly you must if you are employing an idea introduced in the video), but the focus of the essay needs to be on close reading your chosen passage and making an argument about the novel as a whole.   All citations to the primary texts should be parenthetical by page number. No research is necessary for this essay, and you should not consult any outside source for ideas.

Summarize Reading

2-3paragraph for each reading, separated https://philosophy.as.uky.edu/sites/default/files/We%20Can%20Remember%20It%20for%20You%20Wholesale%20-%20Philip%20K.%20Dick.pdf http://sickmyduck.narod.ru/pkd042-0.html This need only be one to three paragraphs. Focus on having a solid thesis statement formulated before writing your paragraph. Use the following format: Summarize the entire story briefly in your words. Keep in mind your thesis as you do this. Usually 3-5 sentences are enough, but you might want to build things up more substantially depending upon your style and thesis.  Pop your thesis statement. Make sure to transition from summary into this in smooth fashion. Keep in mind that a thesis statement for a literary interpretation is slightly more complicated than a policy-based thesis. Refer to the narrative lesson at the beginning of the novel for an example. Develop your argument by using one or two quotations; then, explain why you think the chosen examples support your argument. In other words, you must try to argue for metaphor, connection, and meaning.
