Literature Analysis
Life has two days: one peace, one wariness, And has two sides: worry and happiness. Ask him who taunts us with adversity, Does fate, save those worth of note, oppress? Dont you see that the blowing, raging storms Only the tallest of the trees beset, And of earths many green and barren lots, Only the ones with fruits with stones are hit, And of the countless stars in heavens vault None is eclipsed except the moon and sun? You thought well of the days, when they were good, Oblivious to the ills destined for one. You were deluded by the peaceful nights, Yet in the peace of night does sorrow stun. The merchant recited the poem after he had begged for mercy from the demon who wanted to kill him in retaliation for accidentally killing the demons son. The merchant hit the demons spn in the chest with a date pit and the demon child died instantly. The merchant being a religious man, believes it is the fate of the demon schild that he must die. The angry demon wants the merchant dead for his sin, while the merchant begs for forgiveness. The first reading of the poem demonstrates a simple theme, where the merchant laments about the troubles that can befall a person suddenly in life, like his situation with the demon. However, a close reading reveals a deeper connection between the merchant and the devil, as the lines relate to the whole storys general theme, we see that the poem reveals the injustices that happened to the characters. Ultimately these lessons are a guideline to living so people do not get punished blindly. The injustice as seen by the ignorant seems unjust but in the light of God, these acts are just and his life came full circle. Please focus on::: How does the poem conceptualize and explore that idea of injustice? How does it characterize it and what images does it use?
