Literature Analysis

Life has two days: one peace, one wariness, And has two sides: worry and happiness. Ask him who taunts us with adversity,  “Does fate, save those worth of note, oppress? Don’t you see that the blowing, raging storms Only the tallest of the trees beset,  And of earths many green and barren lots, Only the ones with fruits with stones are hit, And of the countless stars in heaven’s vault None is eclipsed except the moon and sun? You thought well of the days, when they were good, Oblivious to the ills destined for one.  You were deluded by the peaceful nights, Yet in the peace of night does sorrow stun.” The merchant recited the poem after he had begged for mercy from the demon who wanted  to kill him in retaliation for accidentally  killing the demon’s son. The  merchant  hit the demon’s spn in the chest with a date pit and the demon child died instantly. The merchant being a religious man, believes it is the fate of the demon schild that he must die. The angry demon wants the merchant dead for his sin, while the merchant begs for forgiveness. The first reading of the poem demonstrates a simple theme, where the merchant  laments about the troubles that can befall a person suddenly in life, like his situation with the  demon. However, a close reading reveals a deeper connection between the merchant and the devil,  as the lines relate to the whole story’s general theme, we see that the poem reveals the injustices  that happened to the characters.    Ultimately these lessons are a guideline to living so people do not get punished blindly. The injustice as seen by the ignorant seems unjust but in the light of God, these “acts” are just and his life came full circle.  Please focus on::: How does the poem conceptualize and explore that idea of injustice? How does it characterize it and what images does it use?  Realization and lessons   ( each lesson should be a separate paragraph—-Remember to support your argument with quoting analyzing specific words such as “two, eclipsed, moon, sun, two sides, oppress, peaceful, happy, sorrow, and fruits with stones are hit) Lesson #1 Even those who are most powerful cannot escape trouble.Explain and find quote to support   Lesson#2  who is worthy of saving. In the poem the poet is exploring the answer and is saying that (“Does fate, save those worth of note, oppress? Don’t you see that the blowing, raging storms Only the tallest of the trees beset,  [Beset= harm) – The speaker is warning that those with all the power should take care not to harm others because if power is wielded carelessly, punishment will be given.  Find quotes and explain it. Quote specific words and bring it  back to the thesis   Lesson #3- He warns the people to not take life for granted. (The previous personal life0 Home family money power etc. The speaker explain that life exists in 2 ways- happiness and worry”refers to their existence before the encounter as a time of “peace”,  “happiness”, ultimately represented by the “sun” Find quotes and explain it. Quote specific words and bring it  back to the thesis Lesson #4: Life is circular, what you do will return back to you.  *****The merchant was “the tallest of trees” in society which allows him to harm the “oppressed”- the demon.  Find quotes and explain it. Quote specific words and bring it  back to the thesis Conclusion: Justice has prevailed and he must pay for his sins and be a messenger to people who are at risk of experiencing his fate.
