DISCUSSION ESSAY: Watch PSYCHO (Alfred Hitchcock, 1960) in its entirety (108 mins) and write about it in one essay post. EITHER identify some of its implicit and explicit meanings (define these terms first, with reference to your textbook), taking care to distinguish between the two, OR write about how PSYCHO manipulates space and time. The more specific you can be, the better. Give page numbers if you cite or quote the textbook.

Good will hunting Address the prompts below in a thoughtfully composed essay. There are many concepts to consider in Good Will Hunting. One concept is Dr. Sean Maguire’s (Robin William’s character) concept of a soulmate. What is your concept of a soulmate? As you define that, think about the concept of triad used in this unit. Then, look at Sean’s concept of a soulmate. How does it differ from your concept? Does Sean’s concept make you redefine yours? In the end, what do you think of the concept of a soulmate?

YOU HAVE TO WATCH BOTH FILMS AND COMPARE.  Compare the classic Mexican film María Candelaria with Heli.  How has Mexico changed? You do not need to do research for the writing of the paper (although you may draw upon assigned reading for the class).  Instead, you should focus on your analysis of the films.  Your essay should have an argument which is clearly stated in the introduction, developed and supported in the body of the essay, and reiterated in the conclusion. Your essay should have a title page (with a title).  Your essay should be built around cohesive paragraphs of four to six sentences.  Each paragraph should have an explicit purpose, explained in a topic sentence.  Do not use contractions, or colloquial words and phrases.  Do not say “I think,” “I believe,” and other such expressions—just say what you have to say.   Your final drafts should be clean and neat, free of distractions from misspelled words and grammatical mistakes.  Proofread at least your first draft, making any necessary corrections.

Use ideas from “On Reading a Video Text“ and “Masters of Desire: The culture of American advertising“ as lenses to analyze the video advertisement ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=koPmuEyP3a0 ). How does the advertisement attempt to persuade the viewer to utilize – or not utilize – a product, service, or brand? What story does it tell? What sorts of cultural symbols, values, and myths does it draw on? Who is the target audience for this advertisement? You must consider how your argument complicates or extends the ideas from “On Reading a Video Text“ and “Masters of Desire: The culture of American advertising“.

The book that needs to be discussed as the movie is “You are worth it” by Kyle Carpenter. Using the text you selected during Week 1 of our class, the final essay asks you to discuss its cinematic possibilities. You will write a four to five page essay (excluding Works Cited) explaining which parts of the story would be easy to adapt and which would resist translation. You should also touch upon some of the social, economic, technical, or spectatorial challenges a filmmaker might encounter in adapting the text. Your submission will be a well-thought out and well-organized essay which is properly formatted, based on the APUS writing standards and policy. Be sure to include a thesis in the introduction and develop that thesis throughout the bulk of your essay. Use appropriate movie titles (including year) to support your thesis. You should make use of the online APUS library in searching for sources to support your points. Avoid all uses of Wikipedia (or any encyclopedia or dictionary) and reference guides like SparkNotes.
