Police Brutality
Your first formal college essay assignment asks you to compose an argumentative essay about a topic you care about. This assignment has several parts that will culminate in a 3-4 page argumentative essay centered on a critical analysis of a scholarly essay or news article with which you strongly disagree. Your essay should include an introductory paragraph that presents the topic clearly (and why it matters) and the different points of view (or positions) on the topic. The body of your essay should engage closely with a specific article or scholarly essay that represents a position on your topic that you strongly disagree with. Using the passage the text you posted to Discussion Board (Oct 19th) try to flesh out your own grasp of the topic by summarizing the message you think is being conveyed. What exactly are they saying? Why does it matter? How much influence does this position have? Attempt to be as neutral as possible by describing the who, the what, the where, the when (and perhaps the why) of the argument you disagree with. Where did you encounter it? Who speaks? Who is being addressed? What is the occasion? Does the view expressed in this instance represent a more widely-held view? What kind of impact does it have? The rest of your essay should present your own argument based on what you see as the major limitations, problems, or contradiction of the position you are arguing against. Try to outline at least points of disagreement. Finally, keep in mind that while the text you have located should be the focus of your essay, it is likely only an example of a much broader position. Why did you select this example? Could you find an even better example? Please refer to the templates in “They Say/I Say” and these lecture slides for help formulating your argument.

Essay on Education based on the 3-5 sources below 3-4 pages MLA FORMAT What to write about? It is basically an analytical and critical essay in response to the articles, poems, and videos we used in class and discussed about. You should argue for or against the authors ideas about new technologies. Read the articles and break them into their components to see what points they make, what evidences and what references are used to support the argument, to develop the ideas, and how they have organized the arguments. Critically, look at the essays or poems. You may agree, or disagree with the ideas. You may like or dislike the ideas. You may argue against them, or be persuaded by them. You should also look at the style of writing, the words, the sentences, the rhetorical elements, etc. Do not miss our class discussions. In class, we read and analyze the sources for our essay . How to write? One way you can begin your argument is to ask a few questions about the sources (poems, videos, articles). Then answer the questions each in a paragraph, and explain your position towards them or your opinion about them. And say why you believe so. Invent your argument. For example: In your introduction introduce your sources: the titles of the articles and the names of the authors. Then state your thesis, and a plan of ideas/the points you would like to elaborate upon in regard to the sources. In the next paragraph, answer this question: What is the authors position toward technology? Is he against it? Is he a Luddite? Why? How do you know that? What is the problem of technology according to the author? And how does technology affect us human beings, our lives, our relationships, our cultures, and our societies? What is the purpose of technology? What are the problems of human beings and what role does technology play in our lives? How do you evaluate the authors writing style, tone, choice of words, sentences, Is he successful in being persuasive? The conclusion is yours. I leave it up to you to say so what? and how you decide to conclude your essay. Quotation and Documentation: In each paragraph in your essay, use quotations from the article, poems, or videos: examples/evidences/details/appeals (logos, ethos, and pathos) that the author uses to support his argument. Put the authors words in quotation marks. Then elaborate on them, and explain if you agree or disagree with them? Why? Remember to cite and document your quotations twice: both in-text and at the end of your essay in the works cited page in MLA format.
