Problem Statement

The Problem Statement in a proposal is typically the first part and comprises about a quarter to one-third of the document. The section should be headed with the words Problem Statement or Problem. As described in your textbook, the problem you hope to solve with your proposal should be significant, solvable, and limited in scope (or local).   The Problem Statement is largely descriptive, but you should draw on some of the analytical skills you have developed in the class thus far. To understand the problem, your reader may need to have a sense of what caused it. Thus, you might draw on skills developed in writing the causal analysis. Alternatively, it might be better to see the problem in its component parts as in an evaluation.   Below, read the explanations about “significance,” “use of sources,” “prior solutions,” and “closing the statement.” Use them as a guide when you write, making sure the Problem Statement fulfills the specific assignment requirements as well as the rhetorical aims and expectations of typical proposal arguments. Note: Secondary section headings are NOT required in your Problem Statement. As such, the four topics described here should not appear as the section subheadings to structure your document. Instead, when you address questions of “significance” and “prior solution” in the Problem Statement, organize your explanations into distinct paragraph(s) that feature clear topic sentences, logical flow of ideas, expansion of evidence and analysis, and strong coherence.   Significance Ultimately, your job is to get your reader on board by proving that the problem exists and that it is significant, in other words that many people are affected or a group of people is affected in a significant way. This aspect of the problem statement is so important that many requests for proposals (or RFPs) require a separate section devoted to significance. Your reader should be left with the idea that this is a serious problem that he or she has to, or wants to, help.(unemployment issues affects a lot, economy, people’s life)   Use of Sources Your sources may help you establish how big the problem is or how many people are affected. You might also use sources to provide data that helps your reader understand the cause or effect of the problem. Because the accuracy of the information is so important (to establish your credibility and convince your reader to help), your sources must be scholarly or academic. Also be sure to cite sources correctly using MLA documentation format and style on a separate Works Cited page at the end of your Problem Statement. Besides listing the full citation entries on the Works Cited page, you need to include parenthetical in-text citations in the Problem Statement for each source per MLA guidelines. Introduce in-text citations using signal phrases where appropriate. Overall, the Problem Statement must cite a minimum of 2 scholarly sources, though you can incorporate additional sources too.   Prior Solutions If others have tried to solve the problem but have failed, you can talk about those attempts in your Problem Statement. Essentially what you will be doing is foreclosing potential criticism that you haven’t thought of this other possible solution. You will be ruling it out so that your solution will be sound more convincing.(setting up , set up some policy for company to give employee who will be fired some buffer period, in this fashion, workers will have time to find new job or some other to ensure his life.)   Closing the Statement Close your Problem Statement in a way that leads into the Solution, which will come next. Returning to the importance of solving the problem may make for a good transition.

Ethical Obligation to the Environment

Need a hug? Tree huggers are often ridiculed. In this society, loving the natural world–really feeling connected–is not exactly encouraged. But if we accept the ecological and philosophical principle of the “biotic community,” then should we not ask, what kind of relationship are we having?  How should we feel?  What are our duties and obligations to fellow members?  If we truly understand the ecological basis of our existence, these questions are not really optional, but essential.   Imagine that you are engaged in a conversation with  a group of high school seniors about to graduate. Let’s imagine they are “the next generation,” and you are in a position to teach them, to help them transcend the limitations of social conditioning.  You are going to teach them to think more critically.  As most of us did, they are growing up in a civilization that has little regard or understanding for the environment on which it depends. They have no substantial sense of a land or environmental ethic. Their values and principles when it comes to the natural world are hazy, undeveloped, and confused.  And yet, they know that there is an environmental crisis, that humans are hastening climate change, and that their future is uncertain. This is the audience for your essay.  Here is the prompt:   What is our ethical obligation to the environment, our biotic community?   Note:  this is a general question, but your answer in the form of a thesis must be specific and narrow.  There are many possible answers, so select your concept(s) or principle(s) as you see fit.   Guidance Based on what you have learned in this module, present, defend, and support your own specific ethical argument, borrowing some ideas from others as needed. Keep the image of your audience in your mind at all times. Imagine that they are resistant to being told, as so many teenagers are, what to value or how to think.  Imagine, also, that they are terrified or angry at the prospect of having to take on such responsibility. They will object to or question what you propose, and you will have to defend your ethics with reasoning, as well as principles, facts, and examples. Ground your argument in “The Land Ethic.”     Length: 1250-1500 words approximately.   Format:  Use MLA format for the layout of the essay, as well as citation and documentation. Do not guess at the format. Consult as needed: MLA format. Sources: Use the materials we have read or viewed in this module. Draw examples and evidence from these sources. You paper is also a demonstration of what you are learning in this course. Local Social Issues

Social issues have to do with relationships between groups of people in society, whether they be ethnic groups, economic groups, religious groups, etc. While we like to think that we live in a society that does not draw lines between groups, the reality is more complex. In my hometown of Fullerton, for example, there is a clear ethnic/economic division that is represented by the railroad tracks, there is homelessness, and a host of other social problems.  What sorts of social problems/issues do you notice in your local community?  Once you have identified your topic, research it. Try to get in the habit of picking up your local (or campus) newspaper, to see what is happening locally. You don’t necessarily have to write about a CURRENT social issue. You may research a social issue that occurred in the past if you wish, like school desegregation, racism, etc.  You want to approach your topic as an academic researcher.  Therefore, try to withold judgements until you have really researched all sides of your chosen topic.  Your task in this essay is to open people’s eyes to social issues in the place where they (and you) live.  As always, your essay needs a clear and focused thesis statement with a TOPIC and a SLANT.  Your thesis cannot simply be informative.  You must be saying something meaningful about your topic, based on the research and critical thinking you have done. For this essay, you must use at least four outside sources. As always, wikipedia does not count as an academic source. One of your sources MUST be a full-on interview, and it cannot be with family or friends. You might also visit your local library, and follow local publications like your community newspaper. Your essay must be at least four full pages, typed double-spaced in Times New Roman font and MLA format. (As far as the interview goes, go ahead and make up a name.)

Fiction / Non-Fiction Assignment Choose one topic from the three provided in the syllabus for the fiction / non-fiction assignment. The topic that you will show after the conclusion (on page 3) is Give a critical account of story of an hour .Follow the guidelines given below to complete the paper: Keep in mind that it will be one composition paper that will go from the introduction, on page 1, to the conclusion, on page 3, with no headings for the paper. Then on page 4, the Works Cited page will be completed. This means that your paper cannot have only page 2 and below, and not page 5 and over. Make certain that, on page 1, you provide an originally created title of your own that is not elementary and not very common. This is why you will continuously be involved with your views about the references used for the paper and focus on subordination and coordination styles throughout the paper (styles of writing explained). You will also need MLA intext citations throughout the paper – not APA style or no style at all. Many students do not pay attention to this correctly and effectively. Paragraphs will be approximately separated into the introduction, three body paragraphs for the most part, and a well-constructed conclusion. Study all these guidelines given only because these guidelines apply to all our papers throughout the semester. Everyone will have 3, 4, or 5 references only. Do not have fewer than three references. Many students are not paying careful attention to intext citations, correct order, and works cited match. Either students do not show these at all, and, if shown, then these are not shown correctly. You cannot pass if you do not have all these fundamentally, valuable required information for the research papers. On the center of page 4, you will indicate Works Cited (nothing else) in order to complete this final part of the paper. Some students do not know how to do the Works Cited section correctly. These are not showing in alphabetical order, not matching intext citations, and very poorly typed with incorrect spacing and possibly having various colors. The OWL program will assist you with all these MLA formalities as well. After the conclusion, on page 3, show the topic exactly as given by the instructor. Every student in the class will show the exact topic that you have chosen for your paper after the conclusion. No other information is needed for the topic. Follow all the guidelines above to submit an advanced, quality paper at this level of study.
