Transforming Students

In this assignment, you will write a one paragraph summary of the article “Brainology: Transforming Students’ Motivation to Learn” by Carolyn Dweck. By summary, you will state what the article is about without any opinion. The first sentence of the paragraph should include “TAG” information, that is, the Title, Author and Genre, and this can be in any order. For example: In the article “Brainology: Transforming Students’ Motivation to Learn,” Carolyn Dweck argues that…..(summarize the main points of her argument without any opinion). Under that paragraph, you will have another paragraph that will offer your response, or your analysis of the material. Here you can include your opinion about Dweck’s argument. Do the same thing for the article “Prominent Scholar Calls Growth Mindset A ‘Cancerous’ Idea, In Isolation” by Adriel Hilton, that is, a summary paragraph that includes “TAG” information and a separate response paragraph. Remember, Hilton is a contributor to the Huffington Post who is reporting on the theory and opinion of Dr. Luke Wood. On a separate page you will have what is called a Works Cited Page. The words Works Cited will be centered at the top, and you will have the citation below that (not centered, but at the left margin). On the Works Cited page, you will list the resources alphabetically by last name, first name. You can only list the information that is available to you. The basic format is: Last name, first name; Title; Publication (meaning the name of the magazine it was published in, for example); Format (meaning Web or Print); Date. Please just do your best with this and look in your English Skills Handbook starting on page 184 for information. Again, with the Works Cited page, just do your best. MLA formatting for the Works Cited page changes constantly. Please type this in 12 point font, preferably Times New Roman. You can submit it here. The file types accepted are Word and PDF (doc, docx, PDF). If you have any problems submitting it, please email it to me with the subject line Summary and Response.

The Journey to Sustainability

Prior to beginning work on this final paper, review all chapters of Bensel and Carbone’s Sustaining Our Planet text (2020). In this paper, you will explore what a future sustainable world might look like, and in the process of doing so, extend your previous descriptions of selected terms and explain how they may play a role in aiding us in achieving environmental sustainability on a global scale. The Journey to Sustainability Imagine a future (probably a long time from now) in which human beings have achieved environmental sustainability on a global scale. That means that we as a species have figured out how to maintain a lifestyle that can go on indefinitely. Humans will exist in harmony with their environment, not needing more resources than can naturally be replenished. What would such a world be like? How might we get there from here? In this final assignment, you will play the part of science-fiction writer, imagining and describing what a sustainable Earth, inhabited by humans, might look like in the distant future. You will need to provide examples throughout to support your descriptions. You should include all the terms that you have researched during Weeks 1 through 4 of this class, underlining each term as you include it. Be sure to expand on your terms and include other concepts that you learned in the course. Provide as detailed a picture as possible of how that future world might function on a day-to-day basis. In your paper, use grammar and spell-checking programs to insure clarity. Proofread carefully prior to submitting your work. Finally, you will submit the document to Waypoint. Your paper will consist of seven paragraphs using the format below to address the elements with the assumption that environmental sustainability has been achieved: Paragraph 1: Describe how the human relationship to nature will be different from what it is at present. Examine how humans will cope differently with the ways that natural phenomena like hurricanes affect lives. Paragraph 2: Describe what Earth’s biodiversity and ecosystems will look like in a sustainable future. Explain what humans have done differently to enable biodiversity and ecosystems to function sustainably. Paragraph 3: Examine how agricultural production will be different in a sustainable future. Paragraph 4: Differentiate between how humans will manage water resources (fresh water and ocean) in the sustainable future compared to how it is done now. Paragraph 5 Examine how humans will meet their energy needs in the future in a way that will enable maintenance of a sustainable, habitable atmosphere and climate. Indicate the changes that humans have made that are enabling them to maintain a healthy atmosphere and climate for all. Paragraph 6: Describe how waste management will be different in a sustainable future. Indicate the changes have been made to how humans think about and treat what is currently called “waste.” Paragraph 7: Summarize some of the major social, economic, political, and ecological choices and tradeoffs that will need to be overcome for this sustainable future to arrive. What are some of the major issues and challenges humans will have to face in order to achieve sustainability on a global scale? The Journey to Sustainability final paper Must be seven paragraphs in length (350 to 700 words) (not including title and reference pages) and formatted according to APA Style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center’s APA Style  (Links to an external site.) Must incorporate all four of your previously selected terms. Must utilize academic voice. See the Academic Voice  (Links to an external site.)  resource for additional guidance. Include two scholarly sources including the course text. The Scholarly, Peer-Reviewed, and Other Credible Sources  (Links to an external site.)  table offers additional guidance on appropriate source types. If you have questions about whether a specific source is appropriate for this assignment, please contact your instructor. Your instructor has the final say about the appropriateness of a specific source for a particular assignment. Must document any information used from sources in APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center’s APA: Citing Within Your Paper  (Links to an external site.) . Can include, as an option, a separate references list that is formatted according to APA Style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. See the APA: Formatting Your References List  (Links to an external site.)  resource in the Ashford Writing Center for specifications. Carefully review the Grading Rubric  (Links to an external site.)  for the criteria that will be used to evaluate your assignment.

Basement Flooding

The topic I chose was Basement Flooding and here are the pointers:  his is for college application and I wanted to highlight on how it changed my life as a 17year old. Having a single mom take care of this situation it added a lot of insight on how to file claims, how to deal with insurance and contractors. What’s a deductible.. and what’s out of pocket ! Had a lot of cleaning and also had to make sure my younger brother was taken care of when mom was busy handling the contractors. A complete week of this flood fixing made me learn management in finance, insurance, home projects and overall how to beat the odds !

Exploring Reliability and Validity

In a 600–900 word document (not including the title and reference page), students will analyze the psychometrics provided from the Values and Motives Questionnaire (VMQ). Use APA formatting for title page, margins, and section headings. To receive full credit for this assignment, be sure to: 1.     Address the type of reliability and validity used. Explain the types of reliability and validity used. The authors of the VMQ do a good job of explaining general principles of norming, 2 types of reliability, and 2 types of validity on pages 14–15. But when they present the specific information about reliability in the first paragraph on page 17, they specifically state that they are using one (1) type of reliability and where this data can be found. This is the reliability that you will describe. The same applies to validity; find the specific information provided by the authors on the VMQ. 2.     Reliability: Address the areas of concern/strength for the Cronbach alpha coefficients. Look at each of the constructs (scales) the test purports to measure and identify the proper category of low, acceptable, and high ranges of the Chronbach’s alpha coefficients for each scale. Use the chart provided in the “What Makes a Good Test” handout. This explains how to read reliability and validity coefficients. Match them to what is in the manual. Report the reliability category for all scales. Look at the number/percent of the scales with problematic versus acceptable internal consistency alpha values. What do you observe? 3.     Explain how sample size and the nature of the population may influence the constructs that the test attempts to measure, noting any strengths and weaknesses in these areas. a.      Validity: Look at the population used for the VMQ and the populations for the tests used to evaluate the VMQ’s validity. Do you believe that the populations of the other tests are comparable to the population used in the VMQ? Does this raise an issue with the validity? b.     VMQ Norming Population: Is it representative of the population you want to use it for? How about gender and cultural representation? Is there demographic information and is it sufficient to draw conclusions? Do you believe that the results of the group taking the VMQ are broad enough to generalize to other populations? Did they sample enough people to believe that this sample captures the traits of the population? The answers to these questions will help you to evaluate potential issues with both validity and generalizability. 4.     Form an opinion of the test using the information in your report. Summarize the psychometric properties you reported. Look at your evaluation of reliability, validity, and population. Based on your findings, do you believe that the VMQ’s authors sufficiently establish the reliability and validity of the VMQ? Note any concerns. Be sure to view this in terms of the sample size and the makeup of the populations used to norm the instruments. This adds important meaning to the reliability and validity coefficients.     To access and download the VMQ Technical Manual, click on the following link: Values and Motives Questionnaire: The Technical Manual.   Book: Sheperis, C. Compare and Contrast Essay Assignment

The purpose of the Compare and Contrast Assignment is to take two topics of your own choice and write a 2 full-page Compare and Contrast Essay using the organization techniques (Topic-by-Topic or Item-by-Item) presented in Unit 4.   Here are the details: 1. Choose two topics of your choice to compare and contrast. You are not required to do any research for this essay, so this assignment encourages you to pick topics you know about so that you can use your own knowledge to build the content of the essay. Below, there will be some examples of compare and contrast topics, but you may pick your own. Ask your instructor if you have difficulty in finding topics.  2. When you choose your topics, spend some time brainstorming to find three items you can compare between the two topics. The example here is how in the Unit 5 lecture notes we found the items of Cost, Size and Teachers for our Community College and University essay. Again, the items you choose will be your decision about what you would like your essay to focus on. Use your judgment of what you feel is most important to discuss between the two topics. 3. Decide whether to use the Topic-by-Topic pattern or the Item-by-Item pattern. Either pattern is valid, so use the one you are most comfortable with. When you decide on your pattern, create an Outline as we did in the Unit 5 notes for Community Colleges and Universities. 4. Be sure that your essay has an introduction that has the four points listed in the lecture notes, not necessarily in the order given in the notes: Topic, Thesis, Attention Grabber, Signposting. (Note, if you decide to write the essay inductively by not having the thesis in the introduction but in the conclusion, that is acceptable, so in place of the thesis in the introduction, you may ask a question and/or explain the purpose of the essay). 5. With your outline, you will write the essay filling in all the details for each point in the outline. 6. Be sure to have a conclusion where you evaluate and analyze the topics. This conclusion could be more than one paragraph, and you will likely develop it after writing all the other points of the essay. Part 3 of the Unit 5 notes show how the essay evaluated and analyzed the two types of schools to question the saying “you get what you pay for.” 7. Include a title for the essay. 8. Read over the essay several times to see if you need to make any revisions. Also, proofread the essay to make corrections. It is a good idea to let at least one other person read your essay for revision and proofreading. Your reader could be a friend or family member, or it could even be someone you connect with in class. It is fine to get together with a classmate to e-mail essays back in forth for proofreading and revision.   The essay needs to be at least two full pages following the MLA formatting guidelines of 1-inch margins, double spacing between lines, Times New Roman 12 type.   Ideas for Compare and Contrast Essays: As the instructions above say, you may write your compare and contrast essay on any two topics you choose. However, here are some ideas. These are based on essays the instructor writing this page has seen over the years and ideas from when that same instructor was a student and had to write this type of essay: Online Classes vs. On-Campus Classes High School vs. College Renting vs. Buying a House After High School: Attending College vs. Going to Work Full-Time Summer vs. Winter (or Fall vs. Spring) Dogs vs. Cats Movies vs. Books Two Books compared against each other (or two t.v. shows or two movies compared against each other). Standard Transmissions vs. Automatic Transmissions Sons vs. Daughters Two court cases (writer of this page had to compare two court cases in political science class) Two different historical events (World War II vs. Civil War) Playing Guitar vs Playing Bass Two Restaurants compared against each other Two Branches of Government (Legislative Branch vs. Judicial Branch) Two Different Decades (1970’s vs. 2010’s) Two Periods of Your Life (teenage years vs. young adult years) You can see there are many different ideas for this essay. You may use any of these ideas or modify them in any way. It is okay to pick completely new topics. It is amazing some of the creative ideas students have come up with, and the evaluations and analysis to come out of the essays has been fascinating
