Transforming Students
In this assignment, you will write a one paragraph summary of the article “Brainology: Transforming Students’ Motivation to Learn” by Carolyn Dweck. By summary, you will state what the article is about without any opinion. The first sentence of the paragraph should include “TAG” information, that is, the Title, Author and Genre, and this can be in any order. For example: In the article “Brainology: Transforming Students’ Motivation to Learn,” Carolyn Dweck argues that…..(summarize the main points of her argument without any opinion). Under that paragraph, you will have another paragraph that will offer your response, or your analysis of the material. Here you can include your opinion about Dweck’s argument. Do the same thing for the article Prominent Scholar Calls Growth Mindset A Cancerous Idea, In Isolation by Adriel Hilton, that is, a summary paragraph that includes “TAG” information and a separate response paragraph. Remember, Hilton is a contributor to the Huffington Post who is reporting on the theory and opinion of Dr. Luke Wood. On a separate page you will have what is called a Works Cited Page. The words Works Cited will be centered at the top, and you will have the citation below that (not centered, but at the left margin). On the Works Cited page, you will list the resources alphabetically by last name, first name. You can only list the information that is available to you. The basic format is: Last name, first name; Title; Publication (meaning the name of the magazine it was published in, for example); Format (meaning Web or Print); Date. Please just do your best with this and look in your English Skills Handbook starting on page 184 for information. Again, with the Works Cited page, just do your best. MLA formatting for the Works Cited page changes constantly. Please type this in 12 point font, preferably Times New Roman. You can submit it here. The file types accepted are Word and PDF (doc, docx, PDF). If you have any problems submitting it, please email it to me with the subject line Summary and Response.
