Learning to Read

read“Learning to Read” by Malcolm X (1965)  , making sure A) your introduction paragraph ends with an argumentative thesis statement that you will support throughout the rest of your essay and B) your body paragraphs support that thesis with persuasive evidence/examples.  Expand your diagnostic essay into a 3-page essay.  Here is a breakdown of how your essay should be structured:  In the introduction paragraph, introduce your text with a brief summary. Give historical/cultural background to put it into context. The last sentence of your introduction should be your thesis statement, where you make your central claim. The rest of your essay will expand on your thesis, so make sure your body paragraphs tie back to it. You can use the thesis statement (and topic sentence) model I gave you for your diagnostic if you want.  Your body paragraphs start with your topic sentence, which is a statement zooms in and supports your thesis statement. After your topic sentence, you need to introduce and integrate direct evidence (mainly in the form of quotes from the text) that backs up your topic sentence. After each piece of evidence, analyze the evidence and explain how it connects to your overall point. Make sure each body paragraph smoothly transitions into the next body paragraph. Each body paragraphs is essentially structured the way I’ve described above.  In your conclusion paragraph, address how the themes and topics you have discussed are still relevant to our lives today. In what ways are they still relevant? In what ways have things changed? Where do we go from here on these types of issues? Feel free to give examples to support your points.

Bias and Prejudice

Journal entries help you to reflect, think critically, express your feelings, and write focused arguments about the concepts and ideas we review in the course. In this entry, you will write about your personal experiences with prejudice and bias. Your entry must be at least 500 words in length (not including any subheadings or restatements of the questions). Make sure you carefully review the scoring rubric for the diversity journal entries before submitting your assignment. Journal Prompt Can you think of a situation at school or at work in which you were judged on something other than merit? If so, what was the situation and how did you feel? When did you last encounter prejudice? And when did you last sense that you were showing prejudice toward others? Research shows that we have the power to control our biases if we are aware of them and concerned about them. Conversely, a lack of awareness will make it more certain that our biases will control us. What are two of your biases about people based on their age, race, class, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation?

To Reduce the Violence in our Society

This assignment is in two parts. To prepare for the assignment requirements, read the following essay and answer the questions below. Teenagers seems to be out of control now days, and something needs to be done to control the violence in our society. To reduce the violence in our society, I feel that we needs to provide more jobs, provide more community centers, and a teen curfew should be enforced by the police. By providing more jobs will allow a teen to make their own money, so they won’t have to steal things or rob people. Having a job will provide teens with security and a advancement in society. A job will keep more teenagers off the street; therefore, reducing the crime in our society. A job will keep teens occupied with something to do, instead of bored and getting together with friends to commit a crime. Another, way for our community to reduce teenage violence would be to provide more community centers and set up more recreation activities such as bowling leagues, baseball and basketball teams, and alcohol free clubs for this teenagers. By providing more community will allow teens to get together and do activities other than committing a crime. Community centers in a neighborhood is a great place for teenagers to spend time with his or her friend and like doing recreation activities together. Community centers is a great place for teens to be instead of out in the hood doing crimes. I feel that, another way to reducing crimes in our society to set up a curfew for teenagers. Setting up a curfew will allow that teens are in home, they are not out in the street commuting crimes. Usually peoples homes are broken into in the middle of the night. By setting up a curfew for teens should reduce the number of break-ins. A curfew for teens will allow a parent to spend more time with their children; thus, allowing the family to spend quality time together, and also gives parents more time to educator their children, specially teens, on violence and the negative outcome of committing a crime.
