Prompt: In The Writing of Fiction (1925), novelist Edith Wharton states the following: At every stage in the progress of his tale the novelist must rely on what may be called the illuminating incident to reveal and emphasize the inner meaning of each situation. Illuminating incidents are the magic casements of fiction, its vistas on infinity. Using The Awakening, write a well-organized essay in which you describe an “illuminating” episode or moment and explain how it functions as a “casement,” a window that opens onto the meaning of the work as a whole. Avoid mere plot summary. Advice: Your essay should include a worthy title, a strong introduction that includes the title expressed in italics, the author, and a collegiate thesis. The body paragraphs should have a topic sentence driven by the thesis, at least two correctly cited quotes from the book, and ample analysis of each quote. There should be strong transitions between paragraphs. The concluding paragraph should be all analysis/opinion, and should contain a mature insight about how the book reveals something universal about the human condition. The final line of the concluding paragraph should allude to the worthy title in some way. Your essay must have a Works Cited page. Essay due the first day of school along with your fully annotated copy of the book.

Write a 1,250-word essay on one of the topics below. You must use at least three outside sources (not including the one listed below and not including your textbook). Cite your sources according to MLA style, and please type in 12-point Times New Roman font with 1-inch page margins. Follow the formatting instructions on the Essay Reference Guide, and include a Works Cited page at the end with alphabetized entries for your outside sources and your text. Please submit your ThinkingStorm tutor’s notes alongside your final draft of Essay #4. Ultimately, there should be two documents in the Assignments folder: your tutor’s draft and your final draft. Biographical: Subject Robert Frost’s “Design” to a biographical reading. Consider its meditations on life, death, and fate (or, alternatively, the natural order of the world) and relate this to details of Frost’s life. How might his upbringing and the events in his life have influenced this poem? What does this poem teach us about Frost’s views on life? Be sure to analyze the symbolism in the poem to uncover more about the meaning of “Design” and the way Frost viewed the world.

Part 1 (only): Students will perform the following assignment:  After reading my Week 11 Lecture Script — in which I talk about “mythical symbols” as “the products of the imagination” of the Hellenic Mind — perform the following activity: give attention to the following mythical symbols which you will find in the short excerpt (the “Chorus”) for this module’s reading:   a. snake b. Calypso     Now pick at least 3 symbols from the list of symbols above– all taken from our Module 11 excerpt, Shelley’s “Chorus,” and then tell me    –  how do the symbols that you picked function to either “express,” or “realize,” or “compliment” or “prove” the utopian intention of Shelley’s first line.. “The world’s great age begins anew / The golden years return.”  Shelley, in other words, is relying on symbolic language to prove the thesis of his first line. This is just a lesson in trying to read “symbolic” (versus ordinary) language.  * you might need to do a small bit of web research (Googling) to discover what each symbolic image/ allusion basically means.

English 2-3 must read “The Monkey’s Paw”. After reading, students are to identify (underline, highlight, bold…etc) as many literary terms in the story (minimum of 10 terms). Create a list of the terms and explain how each one is being used in the text. Then, students are to compose a list of 3 themes/central ideas found in their story. For each theme students are asked to compose a paragraph response (7 sentences) explaining how the theme is used/portrayed in the text. Make sure to use textual evidence for support. Similarly, students will then compose a list of 3 Literary Terms that help portray or illustrate each of the themes they found. Students are to explain how the term was used and how it best shows the theme, with textual evidence for support (5 sentences). In total students should have a list of 10 literary terms found in the text, 3 theme paragraphs and 3 literary term paragraphs.
