Prepare a response memo to distinguish between organized crime and white-collar crime. Assume the organizations ethics manager asked you to clarify issues on the topic. In your response, be sure to address the following: Compare organized crime and white collar crime, and then identify the interactivity between the two. Explain how governmental entities fit within this relationship. Analyze the interrelationships and networks that exist between government employees, legitimate business professionals, and organized crime groups. Recommend specific policy measures to be adopted to encourage exposure of white collar crime. Provide specific examples where appropriate to support and illustrate your analysis. Support your memo with a minimum of three scholarly resources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including older articles, may be included.
Policies and Issues in Criminology
1. According to your reading on page 6 Policies and Issues in Criminology should sex offenders be registered? Considering the findings of Zgoba and Bachar, would you advocate abandoning sex offender registration laws because they are ineffective? Or might there be other reasons to keep them active? 2. Read the Text in the Box on page 10 and explain what Dr. Nicholas testified with regard to the defendants brain. What do you think: Should his crime be excused? Why is this an example of positivist criminology? 3. Watch the video NYPD’s Stop-and-Frisk: Racial Profiling or ‘Proactive Policing’? at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jqXeW5C324 An in-depth look at racial profiling by the NYPD by the ABC News Show. Discussion: Discuss the arguments for and against the NYPD stop and frisk policy
Discrimination in the Workplace
There is still a lot of discussion today about discrimination in the workplace, whether based on race or gender. Many people think women have finally arrived, while others feel that they still have a long ways to go. Does gender-based discrimination still exist in the work place? If so, to what extent does it exist? Are there traditional gender roles for men and women in the workplace? How do patterns of treatment of women in the workplace differ from that of men? Have women smashed or only cracked the glass ceiling? Give specific examples. Define glass escalator/elevator. Does it really exist, and if so, how has it affected both men and women in the work place. Answers should be based on research and not just your gut feelings. Give examples and facts to support your claims/conclusions. References must be included.

Probation and Parole Assignment 4
You are an attorney who represents Joey Maltese. Joey has been charged with six counts of tax fraud and six counts of tax evasion, embezzlement, and conspiracy to commit murder. The prosecutors in Joeys case contend that Joey poses a threat to public safety. They filed a motion seeking to have Joey held without granting bail pending trial. You conduct a little legal research as follows to see if prosecutors will be successful on their motion: Please read the Syllabus portion of United States v. Salerno, 481 U.S. 739 (1987); https://www.law.cornell.edu/supremecourt/text/481/739. Pay particular attention to the Bail Reform Act of 1984. Discuss its provisions. Discuss how the Risk-Needs Assessment (RNA) is used in making determinations about granting bail. Lay out the factors that work for or against Joey. In other words, create a fictional actuarial instrument for your client based on objective criteria. Discuss, too, how much risk Joey poses to the community. Please read the following article as well, which will also help you in preparing your analysis: https://www.ca.gov/archive/gov39/2018/08/28/governor-brown-signs-legislation-to-revamp-californias-bail-system-protect-public-safety/index.html Explain what the U.S. Supreme Court said in United States v. Salerno regarding whether the Eighth Amendment requires release on bail.
