For this assignment, you will write a 3-4 page Process Analysis Essay in which you explain the steps, procedures, and sequence involved in doing something. The minimum length requirement for this assignment is 3 full pages. As a topic, you will choose any process or action that you are interested in or knowledgeable about. Your choices can include things like changing a car battery, skiing down a mountain, baking a cake, hitting a baseball, building a bookshelf, or practically anything that requires directions, instructions, and a process of actions. My only requirement is that the process you describe be legal. Introduce your topic in the introductory paragraph and then include a thesis that establishes your position & purpose — in other words, what are you trying to show or illustrate here? Why is your process analysis important? Decide which steps to include. What information & steps will your readers need? This is sort of like selecting your narrative sequence in the previous assignment. Figure out your organizational structure. Explain the process or action step-by-step. Some processes or actions have clear & obvious chronological sequences. Other times, you will have to come up with the sequence yourself. Planning this organizational structure will also allow you to plan your body paragraphs. Write 3-4 body paragraph in which you walk us through your process. Use directional analysis for step-by-step instructions. Use informational analysis to explain how something works or happens. Describe and explain the sequence of events or actions involved in your process. Be specific & detailed! In the bodies, provide the audience with the help they need — this means that you might need to offer some background info, depending on how complicated your topic is. It’s also important to warn readers about any challenges use clear verbs, transitional words & phrases that help readers follow the sequence of steps, and time signals like first, next, now, after, before & finally. Write an appropriate concluding paragraph. The conclusion should restate the process you’ve describe — don’t repeat them word for word, but summarize them briefly. Then you should finish by driving home the significance of this process or action. This assignment, just like all major essay assignments in this class, must be formatted according to current MLA standards. This means double-spaced, Times New Roman 12 sized font, 1 inch margins, page numbers, and a proper heading at the top of the page. You also must include an original title!
