First question Choose a global event that has received wide media coverage by various media outlets over the past three years (2017-2020). The event could have taken place in your own country or anywhere else in the world. A link to the event coverage should be attached (videoreportetc.). First, briefly describe the event and then answer 2 out of the 3 the following: Can the event be defined as a “Mores” norm or a “Folkways” norm? In your answer, give an example of a society where a similar event would be defined differently. Moreover, explain what are the sanctions that accompany the violation of the chosen norm, and which social control mechanisms are expected to enforce them? Analyze your chosen event using the terms “modernity”/”postmodernity”. First, in your answer, discuss in-depth the theoretical stages of the term as taught in class. Second, integrate the term (modernity”/”postmodernity”) to your event, while you are explaining its relevancy to the case study. Explain your chosen event according to Tafel and Turner’s “Social Identity Theory”. In your answer, state the main characteristics of the theory and how they are being demonstrated throughout the event media coverage. Second question Choose a familiar figure/character from the world of entertainment/fashion/politics who has undergone a drastic (external) change in the body. A link should be attached (videoreportetc.). Analyze the figure’s social identity and outward appearance, according to two of the following sections: The dramaturgical approach: how does this character behave in personal versus public life? Please point out the differences and how they are expressed through the dramaturgical approach. In your answer, elaborate on the characteristics of the approach, while delivering specific examples of events/processes related to the character. Analyze the behavior of the character you have chosen from a gender perspective. Does its gender identity and behavior conform to social norms and expectations? Please explain how. In your answer use the terms “culture”, “symbols”, “socialization”, as well as other theoretical aspects taught in class. Analyze the bodily change the character has undergone via one of the stages of physical punishment that was taught in the course. In the answer explain the stage you have chosen and link it to your case.
