Universal Declaration of Human Rights
Read through the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Think carefully about the implications of the various human rights (Articles) in the UN Declaration. All of these articles posit certain rights and guarantees for all human beings. These include an adequate standard of living, equal pay, access to a quality education, tolerance/understanding of differences, etc. Choose a human right from the list (if there is another right that is related to the one you choose, you may also include that). Address the following questions: To what extent are those rights being accomplished or violated? How so? (provide examples). Are they supported or hindered by social institutions (the US/Global economy, education, the media, etc.)? –Refer to at least 3 literature/data sources. Apply relevant concepts/terms discussed in class. What are some actions people can take to advance/advocate for these rights? Draw from history (actions taken in the past that lead to social change); contemporary techniques (social media, for example); and/or actions you observed during your service learning. Do you think the aims of the organizations you participated with (and the time you spent helping them) have had an important impact on ensuring that basic human rights are being met? **Your essay should be 3-4 pages long, typed and double-spaced. All margins should be 1″. **Cite your literature sources: Use in-text citation and include a works cited page.
