Unity and Development
When describing a place, follow these guidelines: Images are memories of the 5 senses (sight, sounds, touch, taste and smell). Use all 5 senses to be vivid, and imitate life itself. Focus on: Place – limit the place, and make it vivid, using images (all 5 Senses). This creates credibility. Time of Place – limit the time, and describe with quality of light and sounds. The time is significant and relevant. This will create mood. Social Place – limit to the individuals in the description. Persons of interest are individuals. Private Place – the most limited place and time, and the most intimate mood gravitating toward spirituality, horror or both. This produces a revelation of truth. Action takes Place – begin with a Call to Action (almost always a SOUND), someone or something Crosses the Threshold (enters), then action begins. If you follow this order (one paragraph for each), you will; Establish Credibility Create Mood Create Interest Reveal something True, and Be Dramatic! Paragraph length can vary: Paragraph 1 (average length, 5-6 sentences), Paragraph 2 (short, 3 sentences), Paragraph 3 (long, 6-8 sentences), Paragraph 4 (average to long), and Paragraph 5 (short (3-4 sentences). If you follow these guidelines, you have created a MEMOIR.
