Eboni tells her friend that her mother had been pregnant with Eboni around the same age, and she did not want Eboni to repeat the cycle (Laureate Education, 2013). Also, Eboni’s mother yelled at her, telling her she had to get an abortion in the beginning, because that would be best (Plummer, Makris, & Brocksen, 2014). Eboni’s father told her if she got an abortion, that would be a sin (Plummer, et al., 2014). All of these situations have an influence of adultism on the Logan case. Gender interacts with adultism to influence the family’s discourse related to Eboni’s pregnancy as well as other family dynamics, in that her mother is comparing her own life to Eboni’s. The father of Eboni’s baby, Darian, to get an abortion, because he cannot take care of them right now (Plummer, et al., 2014). Darlene is assuming that Eboni will be a single mother, because that is what happened to her (Plummer, et al., 2014). The fact that Eboni and her mother are both bi-racial and her grandmother is African-American interacts with adultism as well. There is a lot of respect for adults in families of color (Adams, Blumenfeld, Castaneda, Hackman, Peters, & Zuniga, 2013). Eboni is trying to be respectful to her grandmother and her father who is Caucasian. Darian is also African-American, and his parents may also have an influence on the discourse related to Eboni’s pregnancy. Class is also an influence with adultism, especially related to Eboni’s pregnancy and the family dynamics. Due to Eboni’s mother being bi-racial, and her father being Caucasian, there may be past influences from the Caucasian side of the family that focuses on a certain class. In some classes, what is considered weak, maybe what others think is strong (Adams, et al., 2013). Along with the thought of being of a certain class, may involve privilege as well. Eboni’s mom feels strongly about Eboni having an abortion but her father does not want her to do that, as he feels she should have something better. Eboni’s father took her to church where Eboni was told if she has an abortion she would go to hell and this made Eboni scared (Plummer, et al., 2014). The relationship between the members of the family differs about age and sometimes privileges. Consequently, such differences mean that there will be a difference in communication. Adultism takes a significant part in family relations and communication. Adults are believed to be right while the children are never right they should always listen to their parents without question. Adultism has gone to the extent of adults dictating their children’s lives with the excuse that they do not want them to make the mistakes that their parents made. IN the Logan case pregnancy of a teenager is seen as an obstacle to achievement. The adults in the case have forgotten their role of guidance, and instead, they look down upon the children. The most immediate effect of adultism is lack of support to teenagers. In the Logan case, there is a teenager who needs support so that she can achieve her dreams despite being pregnant. Ebony’s case is a case that has befallen several families and proved more than just negligence due to adultism. Evidently, family discourse is influenced by class race gender and even privilege. In many families, adults have privileges more than the children. This is because adults have been given a say over the kids. For that reason, the children remain oppressed in a situation where airing their views or objecting something is almost a crime. In many families gender stereotyping is the order of the day. A family which follows the patriarchal order of the society tends to oppress women in such families women do not have a say or even place. Race is mostly influenced by stereotypes and a difference in culture. For instance, most African Americans follow a patriarchal order hence it would be abnormal to find an African American family where women are respected as leaders. Regarding class, a low-income family has a different family discourse from a rich family. In a low-income family case of negligence are bound to be present due to financial constraints while in a rich family teenagers will get the support they need.
