The Dumb Waiter
Questions on the play The Dumb Waiter This time I provide you with the play text alone: rather than asking you to watch some rather uninspiring versions of the play available on YouTube, the purpose of this class is to put you in the shoes of stage directors, who will have to make a lot of decisions themselves about their production. Thus, I am ultimately looking for your own ideas on how to stage this short play and I will ask you to work more on this process in class. The very first task I set for myself when I direct a play is to gather as much information offered by the text. In this case, as you can read in the introduction in the pdf, Harold Pinter is not very fond of providing a lot of details on his characters or their given circumstances. However, he does offer a few elements that you should be aware of if you then want to layer on your own artistic interpretation. Your task here is the following: read the play and complete every question with the data that corresponds to the five categories. Be thorough: a single item is likely not sufficient: e.g. there are a lot of props and you should list them all 1. Space (where the action takes place, geographically, etc.). Where are they in the space and in the world?: 2. Set pieces: what furniture or other large scenographic elements are mentioned?: 3. Objects/props: what props/small objects should the director plan to have available for the actors? 4. Relationships: what is the relationship between the characters? (FYI: there are more than two characters…). What do they do with/for the others? 5. The past: what happened in the past with these characters? Note: please read the instructions very carefully and answer the way it asking . do not need to add any extra words just answer what it asked only . make sure the sentence you will write that make sense to me. write wisely and precisely. i will give the pdf after i will bid
