Studies show that the industry earns over 1.5 billion every year. However, the trend changed due to the prevailing pandemic caused by the deadly virus that originated within China’s borders and spread rapidly to different nations (Malhotra, 2021).The virus causes coronavirus disease, which is a severe respiratory illness that is fatal. The virus that causes the disease is highly transmissible, hence calling for action to curb the spread. As a result, many governments put stringent measures to curb the transmission of the virus, which included banning unnecessary movements, maintaining a considerable distance, wearing protective clothing such as masks, and staying at home whenever possible. These measures affected many sectors of the economy, tourism being one of the industries that were impacted extensively. This essay contains information about how the implications of the aggressive viral transmissions caused the deterioration of the industry. Further, the paper contains information on the unprecedented positive outcomes that have emerged from the sector’s decline (Abu Bakar and Rosbi, 2020).Therefore, although the coronavirus pandemic has harmed the global tourism sector, some positive outcomes have emerged from the effects of the pandemic. This paper purposes to scrutinize the implications of the coronavirus pandemic on international tourism.Closure of the Airline IndustryMany nations in the world stopped all incoming and outgoing flights to derail the spread of the virus. The measure prevented individuals from touring other countries, leading to the decline of the tourism sector (U?ur and Akb?y?k, 2020).According to investigative studies, the travel ban reduced tourism by over 20%. Subsequently, many airlines were closed because of the travel bans that many countries imposed. The result of the control of the movement of people from one place to another and the subsequent closure of many airline companies is the stalling of the operations of many tourism destinations (Škare, Soriano and Rocho?, 2021). The employees working in the airlines lost their jobs, and those airlines that were still operational reduced the number of workers under their employ.Additionally, the economic status of many countries declined because the purchasing power of the people fell. Subsequently, governments suffered losses because of the reduction in the revenue they earned from the aircraft industry. However, closure of the impacted the environment positively. The decision to reduce the frequency of air travel was a positive step because it has helped reduce the pollution of air that is precipitated by airplanes releasing toxic gases into the air. Studies indicate that airplanes produce toxic emissions such as NO2 that disrupt the ozone layer (Jones, Peter, Comfort and Daphne, 2020).Therefore, the reduction in the number of airplanes that transverse the atmosphere resulting from the closure of airlines due to the COVID-19 pandemic has helped decrease the prevalence of air pollution.A Decline in the Functionality of the Tourist SitesThe decision to ban individuals from traveling from one place to another has precipitated a substantial decline of activities in the global tourist destination. Many tourist sites depend on foreigners and travelers who visit the sites, such as animal sanctuaries, mountains, forests, beaches, among other destinations (Škare, Soriano and Rocho?, 2021).The cessation of travel from one place has significantly impacted global tourism by causing a significant decline in the number of individuals who visit the sites. As a result, those employed in the destination have become jobless, which has affected the global economy. However, lack of activity in the tourist sites has impacted the environment positively by precipitating rejuvenation of the ecosystem (Pashkus, Pashkus and Asadulaev, 2021).The reduction of movement in these sites has shielded the ecosystem from continued exploitation that results from the constant flow of individuals in the tourist sites during the peak seasons. The trend causes the vegetation, such as the grasses and undergrowth, to become depleted (Nhamo, Dube and Chikodzi, 2020). Sometimes, the tourists also poach the wildlife; hence, a reduction in the number of people who visit the regions has triggered a notable reduction in poaching activities and the destruction of the natural ecosystems.Closure of the Tourist HotelsThe rapid transmission of the coronavirus disease has affected the tourism sector by causing many tourist hotels and resorts to close down. The fast spread of the virus has caused many countries to advise their citizens to avoid traveling to contain the spread of the virus (Pashkus, Pashkus and Asadulaev, 2021).As a result, many hotels that thrived because of hosting international travelers and tourists have been closed down due to a low turn up of clients. The trend has caused many individuals to become jobless and lack purchasing power, which has contributed to a decline of the global economy. On the other hand, the closure of the hotels is a positive step because of the positive effects it has caused. Firstly, the wastage of large amounts of food characteristic of the tourism industry has declined significantly. The large amount of consumable products that are disposed of as waste has declined. The reduction in food wastage has increased the food reserves of many countries, especially in developing countries with limited food reserves (Prideaux, Thompson and Pabel, 2020). The country’s citizens can now access fresh foodstuffs that used to be sold to tourist hotels and resorts. On the other hand, significant merits are arising from the closure of the hotels despite its drastic effects on those affected.
