First, I think I bit off more than I could chew…but here goes!  Here is my video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Stvep17l9mE please see time frame:18-:54 for the length of time and 1:05 for redness of hands when behavior is complete.    I chose to define compulsive hand washing using hot tap water.  The average household temperature for hot tap water is 120 deg F and serious burns can occur with prolonged use (Hot Water Safety, 2000).  This is a video of a young man who uses only hot tap water (120 deg F) to wash his hands.  He screams “It burns so good!” (OCD Hand Washing – It Hurts So Good, 2007, 0:24) multiple times and continues to wash his hands until he believes they are clean.  He pulls his hands out to look at them and they do not appear to be either red enough or clean enough.  When he decides they are, looks at them, and decides that they still have soap on them.  After rinsing them one final time, he decides they are then red enough and dries his hands.  It is clear in watching this video, that the act of washing his hands in the hot water, is causing significant pain and he coaches his way through it.  In watching this video, I would define this specific target behavior of compulsive handwashing using inappropriately hot water as any occurrence of washing hands for either longer than 20 seconds (ability to sing the alphabet song), with more than one time per occurrence, using no more than 2 pumps of soap, and using a combination of both hot and cold water with water temperature allowing for appropriate voice level for close proximity or 12 inches. Here is my thought process for this…please correct me if I am wrong.  Since the most significant part of this behavior is the temperature of the water, I felt that the duration in the hot water was most important to address first.  Then the number of pumps of soap and so on… I would record this in terms of duration.  In watching this video, I observed that the duration for his handwashing pattern was 1:05 along with an extremely high temperature of the water, the individual washed his hands for a period of 36 seconds and in water that is higher than safely recommended temperatures.  I would think that his handwashing was somewhat appropriate except for the extreme temperature of the water.  I tested it, and washing my hands for over a minute was actually a pretty long time…but I will focus on the temperature of the water. I chose to use the CPR (Conditional Probability Record) to assess the behavior. This form allows for a greater analysis of variables that can influence behavior with the antecedents and also the consequences that are associated with those behaviors.  It also is necessary that the behavior is observed continuously through the observational sessions and in the natural environment.  This form also allows the observer to understand how often the behavior will occur after specific antecedents and the consequences that will occur.  This allows for documentation of a variety of antecedents, what task was given, and any aversive stimuli.  This will help identify which antecedents are more likely to elicit the target behavior.  What is causing his washing of hands
