Demographics and Service

Using the U.S. Census Bureau’s latest Census information (click on United States Census Bureau (Links to an external site.) and find the section under “The American Community Survey”), gather county-level data for the service population of your healthcare department. If you know that your department serves a multi-county area, include data from all of the areas that encompass the primary service area for your organization. The Census contains the following information: Population (current and projected) Race Age Gender Household Size Per capita income Median family income Occupational status Educational level The student is expected to NOT ONLY report the Census data, but look at patterns over time, forecast the trajectory, infuse your understanding of micro- and macro-economics, finance, health policy, state and federal regulations, marketing, business, and clinical operations, and so forth in such a way as to make the demographics make sense. In short, you’re looking to explain the underlying drivers that contributed to the Census data results. In addition, the student will complete a service area structural analysis using Michael Porter’s five forces framework. Remember, this analysis will be looking at external forces that are contributing to service area competition with your approved healthcare department and NOT the organization that the department is apart. The student will recreate the below table and populate it with relevant content following the example provided. There are numerous Internet sites that contain information on Porter’s five forces and should be helpful in determining the type of information which will be appropriate for inclusion in your analysis.
