Change is so great a curse that we could not even abolish so great a wrong as slavery without great temporary suffering; and that people is happiest and most likely to maintain its liberties, and to be prosperous, which, by natural temperament, dislikes change, and can be moved to it only upon important occasions and for clearly and even pressingly necessary objects. Stability of laws, stability in industry and business, stability of character and of purpose in the individual, are all of far greater importance than the most brilliant experiments in government, or the most seductive and adventurous enterprises… As we watch today’s political campaigns, we see most of the Democrat candidates advocating revolutionary changes to our economic system, with a massive increase in the role of government in the lives of all Americans. Such policies as “Medicare for all”, “Guaranteed income for all citizens”, “The Green New Deal”, “Open Borders and Citizenship for all Immigrants” are touted as being, in Nordhoff’s words, “the most brilliant experiments in government, or the most seductive and adventurous enterprises… In an original essay of c.350-500 words, address how you think Nordhoff would respond to the revolutionary proposals of today’s Democrat candidates–Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, et al. Do you believe the positions of Biden, AOC, and The Squad promote national stability, national liberty or national prosperity? Nordhoff comments that even a reason as important and necessary as abolition of slavery could not be accomplished without massive national trauma and violence…at least temporarily. Is battling “Climate Change” as worthy an endeavor as abolishing slavery? In your opinion, can the Democrat/Socialists accomplish their fundamental remaking of America without another outbreak of trauma and violence? As a Texan, how do you predict many in this state would respond should a President Biden, using his already named Gun Czar, Beto O’Rourke, order the confiscation of firearms from all citizens? In short, do you agree with Nordhoff that governments should support stability, prosperity and liberty; and avoid the temptation to indulge in “seductive experiments” in government?
