[SOLVED] Rhetorical Analysis
While this is good, this was not meant to be a research paper. It is meant to demonstrate your own ability to analyze an essay in terms of purpose and patterns. Purpose here is not the theme, subject or thesis. It is one of four rhetorical purposes. That is: expressive (focus on writer), literary (focus on words) persuasive (focus on reader) and referential (focus on subject). And if it is referential you would further need to identify if it is informative, interpretive, or exploratory. In the class we’ve written papers using all of the rhetorical purposes. So what is Merton’s rhetorical purpose? The other part of this type of analysis is to identify the patterns the author uses. It should be clear that the key pattern is comparison and contrast. But are there others? Do your own analysis based on this type of rhetorical analysis. Follow the outline of how to organize the paper and those student analyses of essays in Chapter 15 of your book.
