This means that your job is to develop an extended discussion of the term that goes beyond a simple dictionary definition and provides the reader with a substantive discussion of the term. In doing so, I’m expecting essays that take a scholarly and detached approach to the subject matter. I’m not looking for a booster essay, nor am I looking for critiques. Instead, we want essays that provide the reader with a solid grounding with a term. In other words, if I am unfamiliar with Surrealism, by the time I finish reading your essay on Surrealism, I will be able to use the term in a confident and learned manner.A full list of approved “isms” can be found at the end of this document. This is part of what all good writers must learn to understand. Writing is a craft that requires hard work. Rarely has anyone ever written something worthwhile as a first draft. In other words, the work of writing is not just putting words to paper, but thinking about those words and if they are sufficient and successful.Notes on ExpositionOne of the best ways to plan your work is toyou’ll assume that your reader has no experience with what you’re writing about and, as such, your essay will serve as an entry point. You will be the trusted guide. Remember, your main job in this essay is to help your reader better understand a key term. Your rhetorical focus here is to produce a piece of writing that descriptive, informative, and analytical, but that does not take sides. Another way to think about this project is to read some good examples of the explainer genre. While it is controversial (at least among journalists), the popularity of the genre has been aided in recent years but the emergence of news sites like Pass Notes and The Upshotthat specialize in what is formally known as explainer journalism. As the FIPPwebsite notes, “Put simply, if news content focuses on the ‘Who, What, When, and Where,’ explainer journalism looks to inform the reader of the ‘How and Why.’ It attempts to get behind the news to give the reader background information about a story to ensure that they are able to properly understand events as they unfold” (Norris).
