Details of the task For this assessment, you will be exploring the legacy of ONE of the following studies reviewed in Hock (2015) and submitting a 1200 word essay. For your essay, you will need to use at least three relevant academic journal articles (in addition to the original study and Hock chapter). 1. Reading 17: Discovering love: Harlows (1958) research on love among rhesus monkeys Studied the development of the emotional bond between a baby and mother Distinguished the development of an emotional attachment as distinct from the biological need for food In your essay, you will: (1) Introduce and summarise the original study (i.e., theoretical propositions; method; key findings and implications). (2) Identify and discuss research that has been done since the original study with a focus on articulating how subsequent research has supported, extended upon, and/or refuted the knowledge generated by original study (using at least three academic journal articles). (3) Draw out the key contributions to psychological knowledge generated by the original study and subsequent research and identify key areas of application of that knowledge. Assessment Criteria and Submission Introductory Paragraph (Paragraph 1) (10 marks): In your introductory paragraph, you will need to provide a general introduction to the original study, its key significance and the focus of the essay. Conclude this paragraph by providing a clear indication of the essay structure. Your introductory paragraph should be approximately 150 words. Summary of Original Study (Paragraph 2) (20 marks): Your second (and possibly third) paragraph will be a clear and concise summary of the original study including all key elements. This includes theoretical propositions (i.e., aims, hypotheses), methodology, main findings, and implications. The summary of the original study should be under 400 words. Discussion of Subsequent Research (30 marks): This is where you will discuss subsequent research that has been influenced by the original study. It is important to clearly identify and articulate how subsequent research has supported, extended or refuted the original. This will be several paragraphs and you will need to refer to at least three relevant academic sources. Part of your assessment for this component will be on the relevance of the articles chosen; there should be strong direct connections between the original study and references included in the essay. Conclusion (20 marks): Your conclusion should summarise the key contribution/s to psychological knowledge of the original and subsequent research as well as key areas of application of this knowledge. Your conclusion should be based on what was presented in the body of your essay (do not introduce new information or references). Writing (10 marks): Your essay should be written clearly and in professional, academic tone. Pay attention to paragraph structure and flow. Make sure you proofread your essay to pick up on spelling, expression and grammar errors. Please refer to materials and resources from Session 4 for more information. APA formatting and referencing (10 marks): Your essay should be formatted completely in APA style (see Appendix A: Example essay and template). Notes on formatting Include a separate title page with the title of your essay (i.e., not Assessment 2: Essay) and your name The essay title should appear as heading on the first page of the essay (centered, title case, not bold) Double spacing throughout (or 1 ½ spacing) Times new roman, 12 point font throughout (including title page) First line indent in the body of your essay References should appear on a separate page and should be in alphabetical order. Use hanging indent for your references It is also important to adhere to APA (6th) citation and referencing requirements appropriately in your essay.
