Dialysis, although life-saving, is expensive, inconvenient, and time-consuming. And many patients would do nearly anything in order to lead a “normal” life again. Unfortunately, this has opened up an industry, which specializes in the illegal trafficking of human organs. Although Iran is the only country in which the sale of human organs is legal, many other countries do not readily enforce laws against this practice, which allows those with the means to do so to “buy” an organ for transplant. 1. The scenario found in the original question would result in not one, but two people with one functioning kidney. As we know, a person can survive with one remaining kidney. In this situation, is the kidney “overworked”? If so, what signs or symptoms might one expect to see? Should a person with one kidney make any dietary or other lifestyle changes necessary in order to maintain their health and the relative health of the organ? If so, what might they be?
2. As we have learned from our readings in the text, one of the primary functions of the urinary system is to maintain homeostasis by eliminating wastes while regulating the delicate balance of water and electrolytes within the body. Begin your response to this discussion question by reviewing the normal components of urine. After this, consider the following: Urine is commonly thought of as “sterile”. Using your knowledge of the normal contents of urine, is this assumption correct? If not, why? If so, does urine have any practical uses?
