Introduction All laboratory reports should begin with a short section describing 1) background information; 2) the purpose of the investigation; and 3) the hypothesis to be tested. Always write the introduction in the active voice. Materials and Methods This section should contain a description of the following: 1) experimental procedures; 2) materials and equipment (you may identify these as they are discussed, rather than listing them separately), and 3) the collection of data. The readers should be able to reproduce your experiment. Results Organize and summarize the results of your experiment. Use tables, figures and graphs, as appropriate, to summarize the quantitative data. Also, describe the important aspects of your data in words. Label the tables and figures properly so they can be easily understood. Use a title for all graphs and tables. Make sure that all axes are clearly designated. Discussion Discuss and interpret the experimental results in regard to your hypothesis. Note any limitations (e.g. small sample size) or problems.
