Term: Fertile Crescent In the study of ancient history, the term fertile crescent describes a vast flat plain between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. The region is also called Mesopotamia, a Greek term meaning the land between two rivers. Humans established the first agricultural societies in this region, also known as the cradle of civilization. In this region, with fertile soil created by flooding rivers, humans developed farming methods to increase food production, such as plowing and irrigation. Surplus food allowed for the specialization of work, which led to a need to trade. As people in different specialized jobs exchanged goods and services, and an economic system developed, which enabled urbanization, the forming of governments, and the need for taxation.
