[SOLVED] Gender Inequality
Paper should be between 3-4 pages, not counting reference page. APA format expected. *please watch / refer to links listed in blue Prompt 2: Gender and Gender Inequality The text presents a dark narrative about sexual harassment and violence against women, due in part to the consequences of gender socialization. One of the agents that teaches us about gender is the mass media, and a long recognized critique of the media concerns its images of men and women: stereotypical at best, over-sexualized at worst. Documentaries about advertising ( Killing Us Softly TED Talk ) and the music industry ( Dreamworlds 3 trailer ) point out some of the more egregious examples of sexism, and suggest there is a link between these presentations of gender and the sexual violence found in our society. However, there is a growing list of female actors and musicians who are rejecting the culture that normalized these images. The Me Too Movement has both toppled powerful men and subtly changed gender dynamics. Musicians such as Nicki Minaj, Lizzo, Cardi B, and Rihanna (among others) present women as powerful and in control. One result has been that society is reconsidering previous messages about gender relations. Movies once seen as classics, such as 1984’s 16 Candles, is now viewed as illustration of the rape culture of the 1980’s ( Disturbing Things in 16 Candles Only Adults Notice ). Beloved Christmas songs are seen differently, with some artists going so far as to rewrite the lyrics to make them more palatable for today’s audiences ( Baby its Cold Outside – John Legend and Kelly Clarkson ). And a recent Grease sing-along that aired in June 2020 had a lot of people commenting they did not realize how dirty the lyrics are in “Greased Lightening” or “Summer Nights.” (Note that Grease was written in 1971, famously filmed in 1978.) For your paper, investigate this topic further. Has society changed? Do you see evidence that gender socialization is viewed differently in the media? What about sexual harassment, or sexual violence? Be specific and include current examples from music, movies, social media, the news, or other sources that depict male/female interaction that supports your perspective. And in a broader way, do you think the structural functionalist perspective or conflict theory best describes gender dynamics in society today? Why?
