[SOLVED] Education Research Project
I have commented on all the thesis discussion boards, and you will see almost all of you have a good start, but need to narrow. That is just part of the research process and why we take a few weeks for this. Here are the steps to follow: 1. As I keep saying, do lots of reading about your topic. Realize as you narrow, some of the research you started with won’t be useful anymore. Find five or more articles that focus on what you are writing about. The prompt mentions a minimum of three articles–that is just a passing essay, so plan to use more. 2. narrow the group you are discussing. Think about things like age group, gender, location, level of school, abilities, specific disabilities, socio-economics, race, etc. Be able to define your group in two or more ways. 3. learn about the barrier so you can describe it in a two or three paragraphs. 4. As you are reading, watch for solutions to the barrier. You might find one city or school that has made improvements–use that as a basis for your solution. Don’t invent something or just say more money is needed. 5. You will see on each rough draft assignment there are clear directions for what to turn in–do your best to follow that so I am able to comment on your best work. Purpose: In this research assignment sequence, you will learn many of the different skills and practices necessary for conducting academic research. There are really three main practices on which we will focus: Topic Generation and Research Questions; Using library resources to locate, evaluate, and incorporate strong sources to support your argument, and writing evidence-based, research papers. This paper will be the culmination of all that great work. Skills/Knowledge: Ability to generate a strong research question with appropriate scope Knowledge of library databases and print resources Ability to evaluate secondary and primary sources Proper and ethical integration of source information using MLA formatting Evidence-based proposal of possible solutions to an educational problem Task: For this research paper, consider a challenge or barrier that some people face when trying to access literacy, learning, and/or education. Start big and broad when you first begin considering ideas, but as you work on your topic, refine your topic to one specific problem faced by one specific group of people and seek to find an evidence-based solution. You will probably find this easier if you consider an audience for the paper that has an ability to make the solution happen. Some ideas to consider are race, socioeconomics, first generation parents, parents level of education, geographic location, age, learning difficulties, gender, etc. Before starting this essay, you will be submitting some topic ideas, creating an annotated bibliography, and submitting a topic proposal, so dont start an actual essay until those assignments are completed and graded with comments from me. Your paper must: Include effective and relevant citations: A minimum of four sources from SCC library database sources a minimum of eight in-text citations Produce a minimum of 3 pages with correct MLA formatting Compose an MLA Works Cited page These minimums create a passing essay–strive for more than just minimums!
