Week after week, each module has asked us to explore various professional nursing issues/trends and more that exist into present day. The feedback from reviewing each of my peers weekly discussion posts, responses, and instructor responses has been so beneficial. On of the biggest take away’s for me during this course which I touched on in my prior course work was “cultural awareness”. Once source recently reviewed outlines that “Asking, Awareness, Assessing, and Planning” ensure enhanced patient wellness (Ferwerda, 2016). IT is important that during a new patient assessment or daily assessment that we are Nurses “ask” and not ever assume. Additionally noting that various cultures believe that demonstrating pain may be viewed in their culture as “weakness”. In such situations the nurse should be the advocate if caring for a post surgical patient of such cultures visually demonstrating signs of pain such as grimacing but stating their level of pain is a two out of ten (with ten being the highest pain ever noted). Prior to providing patient care, it is important as Registered Nurses to understand our own personal opinions surrounding various cultural, religious, and societal norms. Understanding the various cultures can help us to ensure “safe” and “effective” care while also identifying the potential for more severe situations such as “Human Trafficking” as outlined in the coursework by Dr. L. During my power point presentation I opted to study the Amish and learn more about their believes. The knowledge gained from this academic research has changed and enhanced my approach to patient assessments. An example is that as cited within my submitted publication, many populations of the Amish believe that only God can heal but allow for modern medication to aid. Most Amish opt for more folk medicine. Additionally noted in this population is that it is their believe that their bodies are “temples of God” and they should respect it with a healthy diet. If they treat and respect their bodies, they will be rewarded with gifts from God such as health and/or a child. I’m sure we all have gained so much knowledge throughout this course, and will continue to as we progress further within our academic journey in achieving our Bachelor of Science in Nursing. I wish everyone continued successful, stay safe and take care! -Justin Bowman, RN Jacksonville, Florida References: Ferwerda, J. (2016, September 16). This was an excellent way to connect the past and the future. With my research, and reading the discussion posts of other students, I learned much about how the past and the future are intertwined. The second goal is the challenges facing the delivery of nursing care. With the nursing shortage impacting every aspect of nursing, including the risk of burn out, exhaustion and stress, the connection to physical and mental illness was an eye-opening lesson. While I personally knew all of this information, the facts and research drove home to me the strength of the issues involved. Another goal in the syllabus is how the nurse is involved in the legal and ethical issues of patient care. This is something a nurse works through with every patient, every day. The nurse tries to provide the best care in the most culturally competent way. However, there are always many issues involved. Do we have enough resources available to provide the best care? This question is tantamount now with the pandemic literally taking every available resource available. Nurses are sick and out of work. They are retiring early. They are exhausted. Ventilators, other equipment, and PPE are at a premium. For a while my institution even had difficulty getting soap and hand-sanitizer refills. We are reusing gowns and masks. Using gloves as our skin (never taking them off, just putting on a second pair) to try and protect ourselves. These are really ethical and legal issues. Another course objective is to understand the five core competencies the Institute of Medicine has established. The health care industry is to provide care using these core principles. The five competencies established involve providing patient centered care, using interdisciplinary teams to have optimum communication across all the areas of care using evidence-based data, with an ongoing effort to improve safety in all areas, while utilizing informatics to optimize the use of gathered data in health care and decision making. The goal is to continue to improve the ability to collect, store and process data to improve health care, all the while, adjusting and adapting to all changes in our world. One of the goals is to increase the education of the nursing work force. Increasing the number of Bachelor of Science nursing graduates in the work force. The ultimate goal is that nurses be complete partners with the doctors and others in health care. The knowledge that I have gained in this class will help me be a more educated and prepared nurse. The process of learning exposes me to situations that I may never have come across and prepares me for the day these situations arise. I enter work every day with new knowledge to help me provide better evidence-based care to those that cross my path. References IOM Future of Nursing Report.
