[SOLVED] Discussion Board Response

This is a Discussion Board Response Please read the questions below and post a reflective, thoughtful, and well-organized response to each of the three questions below, (one for each play). Once you have posted your own response to each question, please respond to another classmate’s post. Remember, your comments are to be more than “agreements.” Rather, think critically about the assertions that your classmate is making and then determine how you might question his or her views, citing specifics from the play, and asking for clarification about what it is that your classmate is claiming, etc. Also, if a classmate asks a question, please reply—after all, it’s only polite, right? 🙂 Questions: (create three separate responses, one response per question) 1. In Trifles, by Susan Glaspell a woman, Mrs. Wright (Minnie) is under investigation for the murder of her husband, Mr. Wright. The sheriff, Mr. Peters and the County Attorney, Mr. Henderson come to the house to investigate the crime followed by two women, Mrs. Peters (the sheriff’s wife) and Mrs. Hale, (a neighbor of Mrs. Wright’s). Although it is the “job” of the men to investigate the crime, the women too are “investigators” — they notice things, as well. Why do the men and women find, regard, and disregard pieces of evidence differently? Illustrate your answers with evidence from the text of the play. Finally, what interpretation of the word “justice” does the play endorse? Is justice universal or relative? 2. Almost everyone knows that Shakespeare’s play, Othello is about jealousy and its often painful consequences. However, could an argument be made that it is also about “pride” and “arrogance”? Is it Othello’s pride that is injured when he believes his beloved Desdemona has given herself to another? Is it his arrogance that will not listen to her entreaties to wait or to ask Cassio to confirm Iago’s heinous claims? Thus, is Othello really just a stupid man? He says at the end of the play: “Remember me as a man who loved not wisely, but too well.” Did he love well? 3. Sophocles’ masterpiece, “Antigone,” like “Trifles,” is also concerned with the notion of justice–doing what’s right. However, in this play, Antigone chooses to knowingly break the law and do what King Creon has expressly forbidden! Why? To whom is Antigone loyal and why? Cite aspects from the play in your answer. In addition, how may Antigone be a “model for human behavior”? What characteristics and qualities does she embody that humankind has celebrated for thousands of years?
