[SOLVED] Birth Story
This assignment provides students with the opportunity to explore, compare, and contrast, two different birth stories. This comparison will allow students to identify similarities and differences in the practices surrounding the antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum experiences of births that occurred in different timeframes, cultures, or other relevant circumstances. Students are to research a birth story that differs from current, regional birthing practices, in order to compare and contrast the similarities and differences. Examples of birth stories that might be used as the basis of this paper: · Compare a birth story that occurred 20 or more years ago, with modern birthing practices · Compare a birth story that occurred in a different country or culture, with birthing practices in America · Compare a birth story with a unique circumstance (such as adoption, multiple gestation, etc.), with a similar birth story occurring in a different timeframe, country, or culture Students will use the knowledge of local, current, birthing practices that they are learning about in class and clinical, as well as information from the literature, to inform one angle of this paper. This information becomes the baseline birthing information for the paper. Students will identify a friend, family member, and/or other person that is willing to share their birth story with the student (they may share anonymously. This becomes the comparison birthing information for the paper. Students will then write about the similarities and differences of these two sources of birthing information. Students will need to specifically discuss the antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum, experiences and practices, from both the baseline and comparison cases (it is understood that when interviewing a person about a previous birth experience, they may not recall every detail; that is okay). Students will also need to incorporate evidence into their discussion, in the form of a minimum of three scholarly sources from the literature. Examples of evidence that might help enrich your papers might be statistics on the rate of C-sections in different years or countries; data on how adoptions were handled in previous years, versus now; the prevalence of using electronic fetal monitoring in a different timeframe or culture; and so forth. Students should consider nursing care, fetal monitoring and surveillance, testing during pregnancy, medications, anesthesia, technology, individuals in the birthing room, and overall postpartum care both during and following the immediate recovery period (for example, home visits or 6-week postpartum checkups could be addressed as well) Antepartum Thoroughly discusses the pregnancy including dating the pregnancy, recommended medications, weight gain, fetal surveillance, tests performed, prenatal education, the role of culture, and birth preparation, in the context of the specific birth story. Thoroughly compares and contrasts to baseline birthing information. Intrapartum Thoroughly discusses the birth, including gestational age, length of labor, analgesics, complications, and if known, time of birth, weight, Apgars and the delivery nurses name. Thoroughly compares and contrasts to baseline birthing information. Postpartum Thoroughly discusses the neonatal period, including time spent in the hospital, infant feeding method, nursing care, recommended medications and any difficulties for the family within the context of the specific birth story. Thoroughly compares and contrasts to postpartum experiences occurring in area hospitals. Patient care technology Thoroughly discusses the use of technology in the context of their birth. Did the technology used improve patient care outcomes and create a safe care environment? Thoroughly compares and contrasts to technology used currently in area hospitals.
