Essay rubric For each essay, the student will: 1. Examine an appropriate contemporary topic in sufficient depth 2. Apply the most appropriate and relevant sociological concepts from chosen theorist in their analysis of the issue. 3. Present a clear and cogent argument in your analysis of the problem. 4. Use correct grammar/spelling/writing. 5. Properly format their paper (including citations and references). Instructions Write a 500-750 word (~2-3 pages) essay in response to one of the two prompts below. All essays should be titled, double-spaced, with standard margins and fonts. DO NOT CREATE A TITLE PAGE OR SEPARATE SECTIONS. Students should employ American Sociological Association style in-text citation methods and a works cited page when drawing on outside sources (including the class textbook). (ASA style guides can be easily found by googling them.) Essays are due Sunday October 11th at 8 pm. They are to be uploaded as .doc or .docx file to Turnitin on the course Blackboard. Writing Prompts 1. Draw on one of the following themes from Webers work to analyze some contemporary problem, including your own experience: a. Rationalization, disenchantment b. Bureaucracy, iron cage 2. Use Simmels ideas around social interactions, money, fashion, or city life to analyze some contemporary problem or some personal experience. 3. Apply DuBoiss concepts to an issue regarding race and inequality in contemporary society. Feel free to draw on personal experience. 4. Use Meads concepts of the self and social interaction to illuminate some aspect of your own life.
