Learning Module Objectives ? Students will be able to describe intrapersonal messages that enhance or distract communication with self and others (CCO – 8) ? Students will be able to illustrate perception challenges that impact communication with others. (CCO -8) Overview According to our text, self-concept is a set of relatively stable perceptions that each of us holds about ourselves. Self-concept is formed through experiences, interaction and feedback we receive from others. Our perceptions of ourselves are developed through our own opinions of how we see ourselves, how we feel and react, and through influences of our culture, teachers, family, friends, strangers, and even the media. In this essay, you will explore the formation of your self-concept and how it influences your communication with others. Read chapter two in the Understanding Human Communication textbook, The Self, Perception and Communication. Pay attention to the following concepts: external influence on self-concept, self-fulfilling prophecy and communication and identity management. While reading these sections, identify personal or real life examples that you can integrate into your essay. Instructions Begin by making a list of the skills, abilities, interests, beliefs and roles that compose your self- concept. From this list, determine three adjectives that most accurately reflect who you think you are most of the time. (examples: self-motivated, energetic, thoughtful, practical, eclectic, eccentric, industrious, independent, etc.). Use this information to compose an introduction for the essay. Make sure to conclude your introduction with a thesis sentence. Use items 2-4 to compose the body of the essay. 2. Explain who or what influenced aspects of your self-concept. Did you pick this up from your parents, a role model, or a celebrity? Did something happen to influence your personality or behaviors? Apply communication theories such as reflected appraisal and/or self-fulfilling prophecy to explain how you perceive yourself (as discussed in chapter 2). You can apply additional references to specific theories of self-concept development in the text, as needed. 8/20/2020 8:22 PM 3.
